At the $250 level, your federal tax rate is like 32%, and you still owe 5% to the state. You’re starting off at $165k after taxes.
Filing jointly is much smarter. You’re at around 24% if you’re married and your spouse works. But toss in a mortgage, a few cars, a couple kids, insurance, groceries, gas, etc., and you’re scraping by.
