Peter Higgs was a British physicist known for his theoretical work on the Higgs boson and the mechanism that gives mass to subatomic particles. He was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work. The existence of the Higgs boson was experimentally confirmed in 2012 by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at CERN.
