I don't know how I missed it but look what came out yesterday!! (Yes it's my piece). I hope that it is useful information for anyone in the field, it is new/not very publicly known stuff, and yes I am still working on more! @bfwloo64
Small Wars Journal@smallwars

This piece rewrites the story behind "On Guerrilla Warfare." It identifies the original Chinese text and exposes how Anglophone scholarship inflated Mao’s role while overlooking his collaborators. smallwarsjournal.com/2026/04/24/pro… #SWJEssay @RSIS_NTU

@AGoldmund Look at these for the same class 3 semesters apart. It's actually so sad assuming the brain damage happened sometime in between and is what accounts for the change. someone shouldve intervened

@Nicole_Lee_Sch Dunno if the algorithm pegged me as a historian (im strategic studies informed by military history)or if the majority of established academics engaging are in history, but I've also run into so many new history people to follow, who are verified non idiots

I mean if this whole citationgate thing does nothing else I hope it at the very least kills your imposter syndrome. Colleagues out here copy/pasting citations they havent even checked exist in the world. Never doubt yourself again.

The number of people outing themselves as bad scholars over this is making me realize that many of our supposed peers lied their way into their positions, which given the number of people who actually did the work & yet lost the game of academic job roulette is just infuriating.

Occasional errors and oversights are part of science. If we lost our driver’s license for a year every time we exceeded the speed limit by 10 km/h, daily life would become unworkable. Many countries instead use point systems, where trust can be rebuilt through good behavior.

Imagine all the new adjunct positions that will be open when the AI-using, citation-not-checking, tenured faculty at prestigious universities are ousted for breaches of academic ethics.

The first major university that publicly commits to a total AI ban in its undergrad teaching (no AI in class, in creating syllabi or class prep, creating & completing assignments, or grading) and makes that part of its brand will see a major surge in applications & enrollment.

I've only ever submitted such sloppy work as a facebook shitpost, and even then I updated the post with corrections after finding out that the source I didn't read thoroughly enough didn't support my claim.
Lenka Zdeborova@zdeborova

@eiszett Have you read all the sources you ever cited? During my PhD we, along with dozens of other papers, cited a paper that I later found did not contain the result for which it was commonly cited. I should be banned I guess.

sometimes I'll hear about an interesting sounding history book, and then I do some more research and learn that historians actually consider it the stupid book for morons that you should only read if you want to be wrong about everything

Listen, walnuts, you can't just cite *stuff* to back up *stuff*. check your damn sources, or I will do it for you. Which doesn't mean much sans phd, but I can make fun of you online. And call you a walnut.

@HistorianZhang The whole conversation has been absolutely terrifying and has gotten worse. Just the other day I was wondering if i should feel bad about calling people walnuts in writing for their mistakes. Once I have a phd and reviewer status I'm gonna give these walnuts hell...

One way people have gotten around this is to say "X as cited by Y" - for history sometimes this is the best you can do because a source is no longer available but quoted elsewhere But I have a feeling that's not what this is about, in which case look it up via ILL

1. This post is AI slop. 2. What it describes is someone using AI to simulate the dialectical activity of an embodied intellectual community. 3. The possibility of #2 rests on some memory of real academic community. 4. That AI “workflow” may in optimal circumstances simulate academic community should be a call to sustain real academic community and not depend on AI simulations.

@pastthephase @dinosaurs1969 I watch teacher content on yt sometimes and I see a lot of teachers sharing their experience of being forced to pass students or inflate grades of students bc it looks better for the school. A lot of kids are graduating and still illiterate.
