“Less than half of overall benefit spending on young people — including personal independence payments and universal credit — involves requirements to look for work or support to help find a job”. THAT IS BECAUSE PIP IS NOT AN OUT-OF-WORK BENEFIT.

40 years ago the average speed of a train in China was….40 miles an hour. More bizarrely for Britain, HS1 cost 50 million a mile, rather than a billion, and took a decade to build. These aren’t long lost abilities, this was built in the 2000s. Something is seriously wrong!
Bojan Pancevski@bopanc

Nothing epitomises Europe's utter loss of state capacity like the inability to build infrastructure (with eg Nordic/Eastern exceptions). Britain invented railways. And is now reduced to this. In the same period China will have built dozens of airports, nuclear power plants etc

Great initiative from @orbooks just in my inbox. Discount codes for those seeking work, those recently let go, those stepping away from job-hunting, and a premium for employers 👀 More of this, please! (Max. uses of each code: 50)

Social housing in London has taken a lot of heat on twitter this weekend. Are social renters disproportionately economically inactive people? (Who should be moved / encouraged out of the capital to make way for productive young professionals?) Wanted to look into the numbers ⬇️

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has set out his views on Labour's path forward and the policy challenges facing the country. Speaking to Channel 4 News' Andrew Misra, Burnham said he wanted Labour to become “a party that they can believe in again, a party solidly on the side of working class people.”

🚨 BREAKING: half of people in the UK have lost access to community spaces - with families in the most deprived areas losing them fastest. Parks, libraries, leisure centres are essential for our mental and physical health. We all need places to connect. Especially when life is tough.

If you feel like a shit person because you’re on benefits, you’re not. You feel that way because power needs you to - it’s a distraction from the real takers. You are alright.

Our economic system is broken. The climate crisis is accelerating. Inequality is deepening. But what if we did things differently? For our next Downstream IRL at @EartHackney, @AaronBastani will sit down with visionary economist @MazzucatoM. They'll discuss what it means to radically reimagine the economy around the ‘common good’ and whether it’s possible - or indeed desirable - to fix capitalism. To kick the evening off, @ayocaesar will be speaking to long-serving Labour MP and former Shadow Chancellor @johnmcdonnellMP about whether Britain is ready for socialism in the next decade. Lets talk about the fear of losing your benefits if you are too sick to work, or have disabilities, or have significant barriers to work. You cant walk into a job. There is a job shortage. This isnt an irrational fear - this is fear of being homeless and destitute with no income.
Department for Work and Pensions@DWPgovuk

“It’s all about putting work and training and opportunity at the heart of the system” – Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden Welfare reform is all about helping people into work – and here are three ways the government is doing this right now
