This month I am Acting Mayor and tonight I chaired the #cityofpg council meeting. Thanks to council and staff for all the support. Never having done it before it was definitely one for the record books! 🤓🤩😍

UBCM is pleased with the Province’s decision to rescind Bill M216, the Professional Reliance Act. We are also grateful to all of the local governments and professional organizations that took the time to share comments on the potential impacts of this Bill.

Thanks to our @UBCM members who provided feedback on Bill M216 and the consequences it would have on development at home in our communities. The local context matters and our voices were heard on this issue. Thanks to @christineeboyle and @BrittnyAnderso for listening.

NEW - BC Housing Minister @christineeboyle has pulled the plug on @G_Anderson1's private members bill, the Professional Reliance Act, after @UBCM and several others came out strongly opposing the changes.

Serious statement by Union of BC Municipalities on #BillM216 Professional Reliance Act (*not dead yet*). 'Because of its wide-ranging, significant defects, @UBCM strongly encourages Committee to recommend back to the House that Bill M216 not proceed.' #vanpoli #bcpoli

Bill M216 Professional Reliance Act continues to move forward despite significant risks it would pose for public safety and liability issues. This week the NDP committee chair cast a deciding vote to keep the bill in motion, defeating a Conservative motion to set the bill aside.

Bill M216 is a flawed bill that was developed without technical input from the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs. Local governments, housing practitioners, and members of the public have been unequivocal in their opposition to the legislation. It’s disappointing the committee did not agree with a motion to set the bill aside. The Legislature must vote to defeat this.

UBCM has directed our solicitor to apply to act as an intervenor in the Cowichan Tribes v. Canada appeal. Our goal is to ensure the Court understands the unique implications this ruling will have on local government’s ability to regulate, tax and service within its jurisdiction.

Struggling with @WestJet is becoming the trend. Bag stuck in AB since Feb 27; I’m now in NL - wearing the same clothes for days. Zero contact or information. As a loyal platinum member, and a world elite credit card holder, I will be looking into my options. This is unacceptable.

@WestJet Yes, the response is @AirCanada has to take possession of the bag but they say you have to transfer it. This is ridiculous. Your agent also said it was already in Halifax. It’s not. Air Canada rep checked all your bags and it’s not there. STILL in @TorontoPearson @cityoftoronto

@ClaimDepartmnt6 You transferred me to @AirCanada and they have been so helpful but you’re the ones that lost the bag. I am in NL now for a business trip and my bag may arrive in two days. Your phone lines required me to fill out a form but it won’t actually let me submit. Do better.

The govt put $1.4B in funding on hold for affordable housing development. @UBCM president Cori Ramsay says there was no notice on the cut, it will leave many non-profit and housing developers in a lurch, & download more provincial responsibilities onto municipalities.
Katie DeRosa@katiederosayyj

Non-profit housing providers say this empty lot on East Pender St, the site of a proposed 64-unit affordable rental building, is now the symbol of a broken promise by the province, one that puts thousands of affordable rental units in jeopardy. #bcpoli cbc.ca/news/canada/br…

In Budget 2026, the Province said that it would slow delivery of its housing commitments, and reallocate $1.4B from its housing strategy. On further inquiry UBCM learned that some of that the reallocation will come from closing the Community Housing Fund. ubcm.ca/about-ubcm/lat…

The Province has announced that licensed premises will be allowed to open at 5am on Sunday, February 22 coinciding with the Olympic gold medal mens hockey game. Local governments need to issue approval for the change to take effect for establishments within their boundaries.

NEW - BC has backed down on proposed changes to the Heritage Conservation Act, that @UBCM and others warned could jam development by boosting conservation for intangible Indigenous cultural sites. Legislation for this spring has been indefinitely postponed.
