@CorunnaSmudge

Final arbiter of what's a tank or not. All views are MOD policy as soon as I state them and legally binding across NATO.

Having left the full-time Army in March, I begin my new job in a church in rural Pembrokeshire on Sunday. Sadly, our house sale/purchase fell through recently, so we are temporarily staying in a caravan! On the upside, it is on a farm and we get to wake up to this every day!

@TBrit90 The number of ESN that are going to accompany this vehicle into service are going to make training essentially impossible. They will sit on the hanger floor unused and the troops untrained

Sunk cost fallacy in all its glory. We are accepting a vehicle that injures soldiers, and is going to take years and billions to mitigate issues.
Deborah Haynes@haynesdeborah

The Ministry of Defence is again asking soldiers to operate the @BritishArmy’s blighted Ajax armoured vehicle following an exercise that left some troops ill and temporarily halted its use. Defence minister @LukePollard says various “strict new controls” are being put in place as the tank-like contraption is again brought out of storage, saying “The safety of our people is non-negotiable”. This multi billion pound programme has yet to see one Ajax deployed on ops after more than a decade and a half of development. And yet more reviews into debacle are still taking place. @sworrall @shashj They diverted a patrol to pick me up and drive me to Bastion. Had the Regt HQ staff lined up on arrival to take my ammo, morphine weapons etc. handed me my kit and straight to the flight line.

"For the sake of morale...it is inadvisable to share news of a bereavement with sailors cooped up for months in a steel can. Only the captain knows the bad news. On the last day of the voyage, he calls in those who have lost a loved one and breaks it to them."
Josh Glancy@joshglancy

Meeting the crew of a Vanguard nuclear submarine as they surfaced after a 206-day vigil is perhaps the most interesting assignment I’ve ever had. I wrote it up for @thetimes thetimes.com/article/0d0d8f…

@sworrall @shashj You can't beat the JCCC system. I was in a patrol base in Afghanistan when a family member died. Wasn't immediate family so it went up the chain to the CO to see if I could go home for the funeral. Said yes and I was stood in then UK 24hr later.

@sworrall @shashj That was always my understanding which is why I find it odd they tell the Captain at all. What's the point. Unless they only get told essentially as the patrol ends so they can get ready to break the news

@sworrall @shashj Awful thing to come ashore to. I can only assume the Captain is told so they can choose if it's sufficiently serious to evacuate the sailor home for?

@CorunnaSmudge @shashj Had it happen to a shipmate on TRIUMPH. Sonar Petty Officer. Brother-in-Law (wife's brother) murdered. Already buried when we got into Gib. Flight home the following day. Taxi waiting at airport to whisk him home. Not sure when the Captain knew.

@thinkdefence They just need to design a 9x9 tent bag that's easier to fit a 9x9 into

As you all know, I am rather partial to a nice trailer, but the very notion of replacing Land Rover FFR plus trailer and 9x9 tent with a more modern version of exactly the same is beyond madness.

@thinkdefence Just buy a 4x4 and fit a radio. If the door can shut properly and the window don't do that weird half open thing that would be great as well.

We are massively overcomplicating LMV, a vehicle that will spend 90% of its time moving bin bags across camp and ferrying hot food to a range. Its not a platform, and it doesnt need system of systems integration.
UK Defence Journal@UKDefJournal

The replacement of the Land Rover will show whether defence procurement can manage integration risk and deliver platforms that are properly proven. Click image for more. ukdefencejournal.org.uk/the-land-rover…

@thinkdefence If Starmer stays defence will be neglected If he goes defence will be neglected. If Labour fall the Tories will neglect defence again under Kemi or anyone else. Farage will talk about defence a lot while simultaneously neglecting it. The Greens will slash defence.

Imagine the British Army with five wheeled GMLRS regiments or 120 launchers. Two for 1st (UK) Division), 1 for 16 Air Assault Brigade, 1 for 3 Commando Brigade, and a Training / Reserve Regiment. The cost lies in GMLRS ER rockets (150 km) and PrSM missiles (1,000 km), not the launcher. These would perfectly complement the M270A2s we have bought. At a stroke, you would have tripled the lethality of the British Army.

@OfficerofEngin1 @BAGGERRALLY So when we gut the hirachey to free up the money the OF3/4/5 who are left are going to do the work for no extra money, slim chance of advancement and all the extra responsibility they can manage. Here you go son you going to command a Bn on a Capt wage now. Don't fuck up.

My plan for British defence. Army - drop to 50,000. 80% infantry with AA and AT capability. AAC gone, paras gone, artillery gone, cavalry gone Airforce - drop everything but air defence Navy - increase the fleet and marines by a factor of at least three Done
