Human consciousness may be far more than a product of our neural wiring. It may be a quantum phenomenon occurring deep within our brain's cellular structure. Y aquí viene lo interesante: la información podría tener masa física. Vopson propone que la información no es algo abstracto. Podría ser un componente real del universo, con efectos físicos medibles, hasta el punto de sugerir un posible “quinto estado de la materia”, además de sólidos, líquidos, gases y plasma. Su idea se basa en el principio de equivalencia masa–energía–información: cada bit de información, ya sea digital o físico, tendría una cantidad extremadamente pequeña de masa asociada. Para ponerlo en perspectiva: borrar 1 terabyte de datos reduciría la masa de un objeto en unos 2,5 × 10⁻²⁵ kg Una cantidad tan pequeña que es imposible de detectar con la tecnología actual. Pero el giro llega cuando esto se escala al universo. Si la información está en todas partes, la masa “oculta” asociada podría acumularse lo suficiente como para contribuir a explicar la materia oscura, esa sustancia invisible que no podemos ver, pero cuya gravedad mantiene unidas a las galaxias.
