4/ Counterparty Proof-of-Burn — the canonical case The Counterparty address deserves a closer look because it is the first major use of a burn address as a Layer 2 launch mechanism. The functional flow operates in three steps: — Step 1 — User Portal: the owner possesses BTC and intends to acquire CounterParty native tokens (XCP). — Step 2 — Bitcoin Mainnet Transaction: transaction details are broadcast to the Bitcoin network, sending BTC to the burn address. — Step 3 — Conversion at the Burn Address (1CounterpartyXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXUFSKm): the Counterparty protocol observes the proven burn on the main chain and proportionally issues new XCP tokens to the sender on the second layer. The technical mechanism — Proof-of-Burn — relies on three properties: — Generated without a private key — Perpetual immobilization — Publicly verifiable The final effects split across two layers: — Effect on Bitcoin (Layer 1): permanent supply reduction, creating deflationary pressure. — Effect on Counterparty (Layer 2): new XCP tokens issued for the user. The summary is structurally elegant: sacrificing an asset on the main chain to acquire an asset on a parallel protocol. This pattern set the precedent for every Proof-of-Burn implementation that followed.

In 2014 XCP itself launched through a Proof-of-Burn mechanism tied directly to Bitcoin: 2,131 BTC was permanently burned in early 2014 (worth $136,773,828 at today's prices) to create the token. That burned Bitcoin anchored the entire Counterparty ecosystem, including these early meme assets to Bitcoin's security and decentralization. After the first card released in 2016 anyone could submit to enter the directory. A community was born and people started to create pepe art and memes. Artists issued each card design directly as XCP assets on Bitcoin. The Rare Pepe Foundation (the scientists) simply curated what appears in the official rare pepe directory. 🐸🧪
