we fight for THEM. If you believe a child has been abused, molested, neglected, or otherwise maltreated, do the right thing: report it.  Call the Texas Abuse and Neglect Hotline for more info on how to report: 1-800-252-5400, or visit txabusehotline.org.

“At the end of the day, that person who harmed you needs to be held responsible.” Powerful words from prosecutor Connie Spence, who’s been at HCDAO for 20+ years. Connie, alongside prosecutor Tiffany Dupree, have dedicated much of their careers fighting for those who struggle to fight for themselves: our children. Connie, Tiffany, and our entire Special Victims Bureau team have shown young survivors: healing is possible. Every day, they work to empower our most vulnerable population, giving children the courage to share their story. Because they are SURVIVORS—not victims. More than a decade ago, Connie and Tiffany started featuring handprints of the brave children who testified against their abusers. What started as a small art project now fills the walls of our Crimes Against Children Division. April is not only National Child Abuse Prevention Month, it’s also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. At HCDAO, we honor the survivors—and we’ll never stop fighting for you. If you believe a child has been abused, molested, neglected, or otherwise maltreated, do the right thing: report it.  Call the Texas Abuse and Neglect Hotline for more info on how to report: 1-800-252-5400, or visit txabusehotline.org.

Any time we get a chance to explain HOW @HarrisCountyDAO works, what the prosecutor’s role is, how we help survivors to navigate the criminal justice system (something they never asked to do), we’ll take it. Thank you @CrimeStopHOU - Balanced Voice podcast episode live soon!

My passion for cold cases turned into hours of interviewing families wanting answers. It led to a 10+ yrs of building trust with some of the hardest working HPD investigators. It led to my #Unsolved docuseries (Hulu!) Couldn’t be more proud to be on this side of the story today.

Today, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office takes a significant step in the ongoing pursuit of justice for Cheryl Henry, Andy Atkinson, and their families. For years, our prosecutors have worked in partnership with @houstonpolice detectives and @FBIHouston agents on this case. Right now, HCDAO, HPD, and the FBI are coordinating a joint press conference. We will not be answering further questions at this time. Media: We will let you know the details of the press conference when it's set.

Beyond proud of the people I work with every day to make Harris County a safer place. @SeanTeareHCDAO one year in making changes, giving survivors a voice, and creating transparency in the office.

"We have the opportunity to impact not just Harris County--but the state, the nation, and the entire world." Couldn't have said it better, Tiana Sanford (HCDAO Bureau Chief). ^ Year one, done. Year two? Let's go. @SeanTeareHCDAO

During The @TexasTribune Festival in November, Harris County District Attorney @SeanTeareHCDAO told an audience that ICE raids have affected nearly a dozen criminal cases his office was pursuing, including sexual assaults of children, because victims and witnesses were either deported or refused to participate in trials because they were undocumented. 'What these raids have done, what the fear around them have done, has made it more difficult for me to prosecute violent offenders,' Teare said. 'Our job is to see that justice is done for every member of our community, regardless of your documentation.' " houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/…

Today, we remember Olegario Aguilar Jr., father to four children, murdered at a carwash more than three years ago. Monday, a jury sentenced Aguilar’s killer, Gabino Ibarra, to life in prison. Justice for Aguilar. Justice for his family. Prosecutors proved Aguilar met Ibarra and his girlfriend at a car wash. During trial, a woman testified she saw Ibarra choke Aguilar, who fell to the ground. Ibarra then shot the 39-year-old. Ibarra and his girlfriend took off in their car and skipped town. Sixteen days later, they were arrested by police.

According to the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention, “A woman who has suffered a nonfatal strangulation incident with her intimate partner is 750% more likely to be killed by the same perpetrator…with a gun.” Let that sink in. Researchers and law enforcement professionals have determined that **nonfatal strangulation is a leading indicator of escalating violence in a relationship** and an important risk factor for homicide in women. Which is why, during Domestic Violence Awareness month, HCDAO hosted the first initiative of its kind--a training session for law enforcement and prosecutors on how to better identify and respond to high-risk DV cases. Specifically, cases involving strangulation.

Think it's NBD to dump a mattress when no one's looking? Think again. Also, don't be weird. Think about the environment. If you can't do that - think about not getting fined/ jail time. Thanks, Harris County!
Harris County District Attorney@HarrisCountyDAO

Thinking about dumping that old desk on a dead-end street? Or dropping your mattress in a ditch? Maybe forgetting your futon on the side of the road? Not smart. Illegal dumping is a serious crime that brings hefty penalties (yes, fines and/or jail time). Not to mention, it’s bad for our planet. Here’s what to do instead: DONATE. Organizations like the @furniturebank are stepping up to make it EASY to do the right thing. Gently used furniture and mattresses can have an afterlife. Hou Furniture Bank will refurbish your unwanted items for people in our community who can use them. So, drop off gently used mattresses/ furniture at – 8220 Mosley Road.  They're open 9-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, until 4 p.m. on Monday, and closed on Sunday. Thanks to @Pct1Constable for your partnership on spreading the word here. Learn more and donate today at houstonfurniturebank.org.

"Gun locks, gun storage--of course. That's a no brainer. But it has to go further than that," said @SeanTeareHCDAO at today's Be Smart Gun Safety Campaign. Keeping guns out of the hands of children prevents tragedy in Harris County. It's a privilege to work alongside @houstonpolice, @houmayor, @HCSOTexas, @MomsDemand, and Council Member @AbbieKamin to promote safe storage of guns. Thank you to @CCOutdoorNA for using your billboards to spread the word. But, we must do more. We need common sense gun safety laws. We must challenge the politicians who make those laws--and demand change. Let's listen to the grief-stricken families of Uvalde, Santa Fe, El Paso, and right here in Houston. They're begging to be heard.

You keep running, we’ll keep searching. In 2014, a child came forward with harrowing details that Benigno Gallegos had abused her for years—the abuse started when she was five years old. Gallegos immediately fled to Mexico. Within a year, HCDAO investigators tracked him down. Gallegos had started a new relationship and a new life. HCDAO worked relentlessly with the Department of Justice to extradite Gallegos back to the US and on December 13, 2023, he was booked into the Harris County Jail. By then, a third victim had come forward saying Gallegos had sexually abused her too. Our prosecutors never stopped working this case. And now, Gallegos will serve the rest of his life in prison. This Office won’t stop pursuing justice, no matter how long it takes.

Felt honored to be in the presence of this woman--any day, but especially on #Juneteenth.
Harris County District Attorney@HarrisCountyDAO

It was a full ceremonial courtroom on #juneteenth2025 to celebrate the legacy of the Honorable Belinda Hill, as her portrait was revealed. It now hangs in the 230th District Court, where Hill was appointed to the bench in 1997 by then Governor George W. Bush. She resigned in December 2012 to serve as the HCDAO First Assistant. Hill was the first Black woman to sit on the bench in a Harris County criminal district court. The lives she touched, the powerhouses she mentored...evident by the legal greats and family/ friends who flew in across the country to honor her.

HAPPENING NOW: Oscar Rosales, 55, has been found guilty by a jury of his peers for Capital Murder of a Peace Officer. On January 23, 2022, Rosales shot and killed Harris County Precinct 5 Deputy Corporal Charles Galloway during a traffic stop in west Houston. Days later, a massive manhunt for Rosales ended in Mexico. Now, the jury will decide whether or not Rosales will be sentenced to death for killing Corporal Galloway.

@theshellbelle This is an incorrect statement. The Honorable Marc Carter was in attendance, standing with law enforcement and victims. DA Teare was meeting with a victim's family--in no way would we have ever canceled that meeting.

I am still so overwhelmed over yesterday and what it means to crime victims. Our LEO’s support never goes unnoticed. District Attorney’s from all over were in attendance as well…. But…. Ours? He sent @CourtneyHCDAO as his surrogate, yet not a single word about the bill signing ceremony that protects innocent people from violent criminals. I’ve seen countless posts about diversions and putting people around the criminal justice system instead of through it. Even though that just victimizes the victims all over again and we never get our deserved justice. Crime victims are getting really sick and tired of being ignored by our only representation in the court of law. Our own elected District Attorney @SeanTeareHCDAO
