His fight is with party leadership and the state government, not the delegates yet he chooses to disrespect the delegates by gathering signatures.
He’s fighting the wrong fire and risks burning himself in the process.

Caucus night is tonight. Please take part in this important process. I believe deeply in Utah’s caucus and convention system because I have seen firsthand why it matters. In 2023, I was elected because delegates put in the time to vet candidates. In a caucus convention system, like ours, candidates can make a strong case regardless of the money in their bank account or the popularity of their name. But it only works if Utahns attend their caucuses. Find where your neighborhood caucus will be held at precinctportal.org.

He started to gather signatures. We convinced him to not and he didn’t turn any in.
He then won convention by +67% and that should have put him directly on the general ballot. That’s where his fight should be.
He’s battling to get to a primary. He can achieve that through the convention. He has the votes.

Phil Lyman chose the convention path. He used the Utah GOP state nominating convention on April 27, 2024, and won the delegates’ preference ballot without needing signatures.

He’s in the wrong battle to win the war.
Gathering signatures gets him to the primary only. That’s where he “lost” to Cox. (He should have been in the general election per our bylaws)
By him gathering signatures it delegitimizes his efforts to kill SB54. With the support he had from 2 years ago there was a very good chance he was going to win convention outright again, and then because of his popularity, win the primary and general election. He is now squarely in the camp he supposedly is fighting against.

we saw this in 22 and 24.
Yet heres the thing, if we can get people in and beat the elites at their own game (the signatures) then they will want to do something else.

I’m not the kind of guy that demands that my mutuals stop following someone but I do find it interesting that I have so many that do follow her. Was this a recent turn to the dark side on her part or has this been on a slow simmer for a while?

Or, people who actually want to make a change would be able to get to a primary with support from the party because the big names decided to take a different vehicle and we suddenly have honest people back in politics. I’m not saying they win all the time, but it would definitely help put principles back in the party.

I would believe that had there been funny business at convention preventing him getting to the primaries. (Set aside the fact that he should have went straight to the general election per our bylaws)
Gathering signatures is getting him to the exact same spot as if he went through the delegates.
My biggest problem with him is he constantly says he trusts the delegates but then by his actions he’s clearly doesn’t.

Signatures are signatures.
There is no difference. Phil has/had plenty of grassroots support. There was absolutely no need to gather signatures. Now that he has hypocritically begun gathering signatures, there is absolutely no reason a state delegate should vote for him.
I encourage all state delegates to vote for someone other than Phil and Celeste.

There is a difference Celeste’s donors are paying for her to gather signatures Phil has volunteers across the state gathering signatures for him I’m confident Phil would repeal SB54 if he could. Until then, I’m unclear why we insist that conservatives not use all the tools available to them

@Jensen_Utah He has. For one, he has alienated many who used to be strong supporters of his. Calling them names because they don’t support his signature gathering campaign. That alone is a sure way to lose supporters.

This isn’t true. @RepMikeKennedy won convention and he won primary and he won general.
On the county level @VoteTrevorLee has won convention, primary and general by being honest and engaging with delegates and the community.
There are others as well. It’s not a broken system until hypocrites like Phil decide to brake it.

Many have criticized @phil_lyman because he's gathering signatures in his bid for Congress this year. It's not the criticism of signatures that bothers me. It's when they go on to say he's being a "hypocrite" or that he's somehow doing something differently than he did last time. This thread posted in March of 2024 from Phil Lyman, explains why he gathered signatures back then. He hasn't changed. The reality is, signature gathering is campaigning. By gathering signatures he can get information out directly to voters, and identify campaign volunteers to build up his grassroots army. It also prevents the establishment from being able to take him out at a single pressure point. We all want signature gathering to end. However, that doesn't mean we have to shoot ourselves in the face in the mean time. Phil Lyman is campaigning. The 2024 delegates knew about this and still nominated him at convention. Time to do it again in 2026, and send him to represent Utah in D.C.
