I have no feelings either way for @SUFCRootsHall tbh, but as their Wembley opponents today are Wealdstone, a team we've encountered many times at @ConcordRangers, I'm fully behind Southend today. Very rare we saw anything positive about the Stones fans or team over the years 😂😂

The leader of Reform UK in Southend has become the city’s new Mayor. Councillor Tony Cox was formally elected as the 105th Mayor of Southend at the Annual Meeting of the Council, taking over the role from councillor Nigel Folkard. The Mayor acts as Southend’s civic representative, attending events, openings and community visits across the city, while supporting local charities and helping promote Southend across the region. Mayor Tony Cox said: “It is such an honour to be chosen as Mayor of our city. I'm proud to serve Southend and will do my absolute best to meet the expectations of this important role. “My wife Michele and I, as well as Valerie Jarvis, are looking forward to getting out and about, meeting the people who make Southend such a special place to live and work, and celebrating the fantastic charities and community groups that support our city every day. “My chosen charities will be SEND The Right Message and SAFE Essex, two causes close to my heart that do outstanding work supporting local people.” Councillor Cox has represented West Shoebury Ward since 2006, aside from a one-year gap in 2014 before being re-elected the following year. He previously served as Leader of Southend City Council from 2023 to 2024 and will continue as leader of the Reform UK group on the council while serving as Mayor. Fellow Reform councillor Sam Journett from Basildon Council travelled to witness the ceremony. Councillor Journett said: “It was an absolute pleasure to see my good friend and mentor Cllr Tony Cox be appointed Mayor of Southend. “If you saw a blubbering 6ft 5 Reform UK Councillor at the back of the room, don’t worry, it was tears of joy for someone who has supported me through some of my toughest moments as a Councillor. Congratulations to Tony, you are going to be a fantastic Mayor.”

This is who Southend’s eight new Reform UK councillors are. Despite Reform UK only having a limited local council presence previously, the party surged to win eight seats across the city in Thursday’s elections. Some of the successful candidates had barely featured in Southend politics before this campaign, while others have links to national Brexit and Reform UK figures. Here’s a closer look at the eight men now representing wards across the city: • Michael Heaver (Prittlewell) is by far the most high-profile politically. He is a former Brexit Party MEP for the East of England, previously worked for Nigel Farage, helped run the pro-Brexit news site ‘Westmonster’ and is now also known through GB News and YouTube political commentary. • Oscar Wood (Belfairs) is a married father of three and described himself during the campaign as “completely new to politics”. He said: “I joined Reform UK to challenge the local financial waste (such as the Better Queensway project) and the incompetence that exists within the Labour, Lib-Dem & Independents administration of Southend City Council. Each year, council tax rises while the standard of local services and infrastructure declines, with too little accountability.” • Frankie Bird (St Laurence) appears to have very little prior political footprint publicly visible before the election. He said he wants to “cut wasteful spending and promote safer communities”, adding that he is “passionate about representing residents’ interests.” • James O’Rourke (St Luke’s) campaigned around protecting green belt and is against an increase of HMOs which he said “commonly bringing anti-social behaviour with them.” He said: “I am brand new to politics and just want to see Southend become a safer, nicer place to live.” • Craig Watt (Blenheim Park) has also previously been a Councillor for Leigh Town Council. His Reform campaign focused around crime and healthcare, and says he wants to “protect local healthcare services” and support measures tackling anti-social behaviour. • Alex Moyies won in Shoeburyness with one of the strongest Reform performances in the city, despite previously having little public profile in Southend politics. He also owns a marketing company and is the the son of James Moyies - who was the former Vote Leave regional director for the east of England and is now a Conservative councillor. • John Corrigan (Thorpe) who appears to have had little previous public political profile but defeated long-standing independent candidate Martin Terry. John is a Thorpe Bay resident and retired local businessman. • Steve Harvey (West Shoebury) secured another Reform gain as the party continued to eat into traditional Conservative support in the east of the city. He stood for election previously as a Conservative candidate in Shoeburyness in 2023.

These are tough results for Labour. There’s no sugarcoating it. We’ve lost brilliant Labour representatives who’ve stood up for their communities. People are still frustrated. Their lives aren’t changing fast enough. We haven’t offered enough hope or optimism for the future. I was elected to change this country - tough days like this don’t weaken my determination to do that. They strengthen it.

@CharliesWrite @InchOrInfinity Interesting, we went the other way, so the kids are veggie until they’re old enough to decide if they want to try meat. Unfortunately, my middle kid loves it 😞

@InchOrInfinity My partner is not veggie and I am, and we agreed that baby would not be until he's old enough to choose, and I'm having to remind myself what I'm doing when making/feeding him purées, because I don't want to accidentally have anything meaty 🤢
