@Orangemangina11 @Smuphy All of those small distributors get their produce from the same fields. I work for one of the big 3 and we sell to, and buy from, the best independent produce distributor in the area. So unless you’re sourcing from a farm you’re fucked either way.

@Smuphy Sysco isn’t the only provider of food to restaurants. There are many local and private distributors that provide fruits and vegetables and other commodities to restaurants. Let’s calm down. Yes it sucks that they’ve “created the monopoly” but they’ve already been the monopoly.

@uncledoomer Distributors sell ingredients as well for scratch restaurants. Yes your “slop” pre made appetizers etc are common, but that’s only a small percentage of what they carry.

@MattForVA lol. I work for the competition. They aren’t controlling food costs thru this. There’s enough competition in the market to keep companies honest. It’s the sales reps and stupid fkn owners that are at fault if their prices are high.

This isn’t a small deal. Restaurant Depot is where most mom & pop restaurants go to buy inventory because Sysco is so expensive. Restaurant Depot was privately owned. Sysco is owned by… you guessed it, BlackRock & Vanguard. Now private equity can control pricing for food costs with zero competition. Just like they did with housing. This should be an anti-trust violation, but we have politicians that work for Big Corp, not us.

@The_Suburbanist @MattForVA Selling food is a very low margin business. I work for one of the big 3 and can still beat their pricing 95% of the time, and even if I don’t I can sell it a couple dollars more for the convenience of not having to drive there, load, drive back and unload.
