Trump promised to lower mortgage rates, but the 30-year rate remains stuck near 7%. The situation may get worse this year for homebuyers as analysts predict persistent inflation could lead the Fed to tighten monetary policy.

Donald Trump's backing has opened the door for Seoul to develop a new submarine programme, intensifying the already fierce arms race on the Korean peninsula. How could it change maritime calculations in the wider region? ft.trib.al/5Lu6uqB

The "gifts" that are showered on Trump often have an unusual aspect. He *asks* for them. Qatar was originally asking $150 to $200M for its luxury 747. But then someone "at the POTUS level" decided it would be a gift. Per @maggieNYT & @jonathanvswan in Regime Change, p.181. ... 1/2

AI demand is becoming a key driver of China's economy: China's chip exports are up to a record ~$290 billion over the last 12 months. This figure has more than doubled over the last 3 years. At the same time, computer and component shipments are up to ~$240 billion, the highest since 2022. Power equipment exports are up to a record ~$190 billion, with the growth accelerating over the last 2 years. This brings China’s total AI-related exports up to ~$720 billion over the last 12 months, an all-time high. Western demand for China-made AI hardware is surging.

BREAKING: A massive column of smoke is rising from Saudi Aramco's Abqaiq oil processing facility, the world's largest and the eastern hub of Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline, with multiple impacts in the past few hours. With both ends of the East-West Pipeline now damaged and burning (Abqaiq in the east and Yanbu port infrastructure in the west), Saudi Arabia's Hormuz-bypass export strategy has now been cut.

The Wall Street Journal reports that concerns over dwindling U.S. air defense interceptor stockpiles have become a key factor in the administration's decision to pause a major escalation against Iran. According to the Journal, Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine warned the White House that declining inventories of Patriot and other interceptors would increase the risk to U.S. forces if large scale operations resumed. The report also says the White House sought to prevent publication of updated government figures on Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD) interceptor expenditures, arguing their release could harm national security. President Donald J. Trump disputed reports of a munitions shortfall, telling the Journal the U.S. has "far more munitions than we need." Outside analysts, however, have warned that the high rate of interceptor use in the conflict could strain U.S. air defense capacity and affect readiness for other potential contingencies. 🔵 Israeli forces continued violating the Gaza ceasefire on Monday with artillery shelling and gunfire across the territory, according to Shehab News Agency. Israeli warships opened fire toward Gaza City’s coast while artillery repeatedly struck eastern areas of the city. Israeli forces also shelled southern Khan Younis, and tanks fired heavily toward northwestern Rafah. No casualties were immediately reported. On Sunday evening, Israeli aircraft fired at least two missiles at a residential building on Salah al-Din Street near the Shujaiya junction, completely destroying it.

BREKAING: China now accounts for ~28% of global manufacturing, more than any other country or economic bloc. This percentage has more than tripled since 2004. By comparison, US factories account for ~17% of global manufacturing value added, or 11 percentage points less than China. In 2004, the US proportion stood at ~22%, more than double China's. Meanwhile, the Eurozone economy represents ~15% of world manufacturing, while Japan accounts for just ~5%. China has become a critical component of global manufacturing.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: “There’s an intellectual scientific vacuum that is descending upon the US and that has consequences. If you’re okay with the US losing its scientific leadership, you will get the country you voted for. That country is one where we will no longer innovate. We will be less secure, less healthy, and less wealthy because some community of people who influence what this country is do not see the value of science”

⭕️ Military boat strikes haven’t reduced U.S. cocaine supply, DEA assesses 🔹An internal DEA report reviewed by The Washington Post found that U.S. military strikes on suspected drug trafficking boats have not reduced cocaine supply in the U.S., instead prompting traffickers to shift toward larger boats hugging coastlines and aircraft routes through Guyana and Suriname. 🔹Based on the price of cocaine, the supply may have increased, according to the Post, with the price of a kilogram in Florida dropping by roughly 50% over the last five years.

🔹The findings contradict President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that the strikes, which have killed at least 221 people since September, cut maritime drug trafficking by “97-98%.”
