What’s happening to Van de Ven is a learning curve the vast majority of CBs with immense PnP have to overcome. They’ve got such superior capacities to recover, that they’re inherently accustomed to correcting rather than preventing. It’s reactivity over proactiveity - simply because it’s the most natural, obvious means to defend. The vast majority of times, it works. But eventually, at the highest level with the tiniest of margins and the boatloads of pressure, odds are it will catch up to you. Araujo is another among countless more. But I do believe it’s absolutely something you can grow out of. In VDV’s case, he’s got so many redeeming qualities, both on the ball and off it, the evolutionary process largely comes down to a fundamental change in mindset.
