Sigh. It was not the first ever, by a long shot. Why does everyone keep reporting this wrong?
* We flew a swimming pool and TRIGA reactor to Geneva in 1955 and 1958
* We flew an operational ASTR on the NTA in 1958
* We delivered the PM-1 microreactor from the factory to an air force airfield in 1961
* The Air Force delivered several TOPAZ-II space reactors from Russia to Sandia via C-5 airlift in 1992

The Nuclear Test Aircraft flew 47 missions carrying an operating 1 MWt nuclear reactor. We were studying radiation shielding in support of our nuclear-powered bomber program.
We've done incredible things before, and I'm excited that we're on track to do more now.

Very much on point. "We need to have 10 or 15 reactors like this up and running from different companies so we can see what design options really work(s)." More importantly, it's how you create the free market environment to enable customers to down select what works for them.

They said it can do 5 MW once it reaches its full power. I've certainly been skeptical of their claims all along, but I'm excited about their momentum and trajectory. Even if their initial plans don't work out as stated, getting a small and uneconomical reactor online is an essential and thrilling step towards the kind of iteration needed to make real-world hands-on progress in advanced nuclear. We need to have 10 or 15 reactors like this up and running from different companies so we can see what design options really work and trade ideas between teams.

In 1961, we flight tested the PM-1 portable nuclear microreactor, and then flew it in 16 packages via C-130 from its factory to an airstrip near its final site. It was re-assembled and operated on a mountaintop in Wyoming. Here's footage of it being loaded and flown.
