@based_in_faith @Jeff_Eager I'm skeptical of his ability to win in November, but it's an uphill battle for any of the Republicans even though the top four all have strengths. Too bad the majority party never offers that many viable candidates. Even for progressives, they still offer limited choices.

@CustomHester @Jeff_Eager It’s going to be a close race and there are challenges each face in the primary and general Those who worked with Diehl on the gas tax walked away impressed with his leadership and organization, balanced approach I saw plenty of Dems and NAV’s helping who liked him too

NYT Opinion has run a piece about Thomas Massie that does not feature the word "Jewish" or mention his record of vile anti-Semitism. Rather, it says "America Needs Him Now More Than Ever." The secret: To get favorable notice from the NYT if you're a Republican, just hate Jews.

@barttels2 @horvick Multonomah always votes late, plus there are few if any competitive races. There aren't any Republicans, so the interesting (but not necessarily close) R primary for governor doesn't have much impact.

@horvick Highly interesting. Any speculation? Measure 120 is going to go down harder than any ballot measure in Oregon history, and it would’ve been a lot worse if it had been kept on the general election ballot as it should have been.

Where voter turnout stands one week before Oregon's primary election It's still early, and plenty of time for this to change, but notable to me that turnout is lowest in Multnomah County Portland and MultCo no longer have primary elections for city council and county commission

My next Oregon Roundup column will be on the flaws of Oregon's primary system. Too few people get to vote and too few races are contested. Usually, where there is a contest it's because unions are trying to unseat someone who wasn't adequately subservient. oregonlive.com/politics/2026/…

Rs shouldn't get their hopes up based on this poll. Favorability numbers don't mean much. ALL politicians are unpopular. Trump was elected with negative numbers. To win, Rs have to convince voters to care more about Oregon than Trump. That will be hard. oregonlive.com/politics/2026/…

Great #TedTurner anecdote from @NickKristof. I heard Turner speak once at a convention of business journalists & it felt like everything he said in the speech was "almost by accident." But his career achievements were anything but accidental. Fair to say he change the world.
Nicholas Kristof@NickKristof

Ted Turner, founder of CNN, died today at 87. nytimes.com/2026/05/06/bus… Most obituaries will focus on his enormous impact on the media world, but I'd also note that he revolutionized philanthropy. Before him, rich people gave to museums, universities, churches. They spent more money buying paintings of women than actually helping women or girls. And then in 1997, Ted changed that almost by accident in a speech. "I was on my way to New York to make the speech,” Ted recalled to me later. “I just thought, what am I going to say?” So, to make the speech interesting, he announced he was going to give $1 billion to the UN to fight global poverty. (Here's the piece where he described how he made that gift: nytimes.com/2012/12/27/opi… ) That started a competition among tycoons to be more philanthropic and led many more to try to help the needy. He made giving cool, and he saved countless lives. RIP, Ted Turner, and thanks for all you did.

My Oregon Roundup column delves into Oregon's dismal jobs numbers. The depth of the problem can't be overemphasized & no matter who or what you blame, many of the causes can be traced to policies that originated in Salem, not in Washington, D.C. oregonroundup.substack.com/p/oregon-econo…

@jordan_pape There are lots of reasons for Oregon's decline. If the public school system isn't at the top of the list, it's close.

This is genuinely a chilling article. Teachers: You do not have to pay union dues if you don't believe "a strike is good no matter what" or in funding anti-capitalist Democratic Socialists candidates that promote "worker militancy." It's your choice to fund extremism or to opt out. oregonlive.com/education/2026…
