Recently, we had a delegation from Ghana 🇬🇭 … One thing that surprised them was the presence of AED machines (see picture below) on almost every floor. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are a basic emergency infrastructure. In sudden cardiac arrest (heart attack), the chance of survival drops by about 7% to 10% every minute. The immediate use of CPR and an AED can double or even triple survival. That is why AEDs should not be rare. They should be standard in airports, schools, churches, stadiums, malls, large office buildings, hotels, ambulances, police and fire stations, gyms, and every hospital emergency unit. The uncomfortable part is this: Some health facilities in Ghana still lack them. A recent study in Ahafo Ano North District found AEDs were absent in 95.5% of facilities surveyed. And these devices are not mythical purchases. When a country struggles to make AEDs standard in emergency care and public spaces, it is hard to argue that our priorities are fully aligned with the realities of time-critical care. ————- Have you come across an AED machine in any public place you have visited in Ghana/Nigeria? Drop a comment. If you are a health worker in Ghana/Nigeria, do you have AED machines in your emergency department?

A teaching hospital for the entire Northern part of Ghana. Hopefully, they do have a few now.

@dr_bandak I work in a Teaching Hospital in Ghana & I don't remember seeing one when I rotated through the ER; probably it's hidden in some locker somewhere 🙃 that I don't know.

@NurainYelu @dr_afo The “we are in Nigeria” part he mentioned means that you’re more likely to get a fake drug here than the European countries you mentioned. What’s so difficult to understand about that especially since he even stated this in the first place?

Sometimes we really want our patients to get a particular brand, not because we get bribed by a particular pharmaceutical company, but because we trust that company to not compromise on dosage and drug constitution. I've seen an hypertensive patient who wasn't responding to 10mg of a particular antihypertensive and she did well on 5mg of a brand of same drug from Pfizer. Please when we write a brand, sell the brand or send the patient elsewhere.
Daakye Pharmacist(PharmD)@ayim_darlington

Can our dear prescribers please stop writing brand names? Why should it take me more than 30 minutes explaining to Daavi that we don’t have this, but what we have is the same drug?? She still said no🫠

Nigerian Medical and Dental Council is swearing in newly qualified Foreign trained Doctors today. I bet you more than half of them have done IELTS and about to write PLAB exams to japa. You can’t spend over N5m per session for tuition fees abroad and go back home 🇳🇬 to work for N200k per month in poor working conditions, amidst insecurity. I don’t blame them. Which way Naija?

The world marked this year’s anti-corruption day over the weekend. As I reiterated on Thursday at the Ghana CEO Network Business Coalition, my administration would wage a strong fight against corruption to save money for reinvestment in the economy. The sword of my fight against corruption will cut across – against past government officials, officials of the incumbent administration, civil and public servants, businesses, government suppliers, etc. if they fall foul of the law. Corruption is a canker that eats away at society. I am steadfast and resolute in my determination to fight corruption at all levels. Today is another opportunity to reaffirm my commitment to fighting and tackling corruption head-on. I believe in transparency, accountability, and good governance. Persons assigned to the public trust must be prepared to be accountable to the people. #Together4Change2024 #LetsBuildGhanaTogether #TheGhanaWeWant
