@TxStormChasers One thing we will never excel at is the forecasting of winter mischief in Texas 😭 it is a kryptonite to all weather model data.

🥵➡🥶 This is classic Texas behavior! A major temperature differential is expected across the state this Saturday. While some see single digits and teens in the Panhandle, others may tag the mid 80s in South Texas. That would be a STEEP change (gradient) of 75 degrees F! It is worth noting that the GFS has the freezing line much further south at this same time. The speed and timing of the cold front still vary from model to model. -Jason

We might be in a La Nina right now, but the tropical troposphere already looks very El Niño like. In the grand scheme of things, El Niño is knocking on the door 🚪

Crash Course on the MJO The MJO is headed into the cold phases right on time for Winter this year. We are currently in phase 6 and headed for phase 7 & 8(see Euro forecast on the right). The MJO generally propagates counterclockwise around this graph. The further outside the center circle you see the plot, the stronger the signal. If the plot goes inside the center circle, that means the signal is generally not strong enough to influence our weather. The temperature composites for each phase are on the left, I have also overlaid helpful red and blue colors on the phase diagram to let you know what temperatures each phase generally produces in the Eastern US. The summary: It looks like there will be no waiting around for a Jan 10th pattern change this year! Winter arrives when it should… Exciting times ahead for Winter lovers! @BigJoeBastardi I wasn’t born then but with the abundance in studies these freezes were detrimental indeed extremely cold all the way down into the RGV is it possible for a similar (not as extreme but still cold) event to occur December ?

Current stratwarm and MJO phase rotation in tandem a rare event. 2 of them are 1983 and 1989 and brutal Decembers followed with major freezes into Texas Citrus areas.
