@HVNYrefugee Originally, they wanted James Arness and ordered a reel of the movie It! (giant ants) to "screen test" him. There's a scene where Fess Parker played the rancher who saw the flying ants and got locked in an asylum. That performance changed their minds & the rest is history.

I'm reading about the Two Ocean Navy Act of 1940 & how the fleet needed to defeat Germany & Japan was already under construction when Pearl Harbor happened & from today's perspective it's impossible to imagine America's political establishment being that strategic & prescient.

@MuseZack It wasn't just strategic and prescient --- there was a big runway that plane had to lumber down. FDR was a navy dude and he'd been in the White House, like, forever.
Also, the aircraft that won the war had been under development due to the failure of the Army to deliver airmail.

My parents went to see Project Hail Mary tonight and reported back to me. They really liked it (particularly my dad, who much more amendable to Sci-Fi concepts than my mom, although she liked it too).
They were very pleased that it was appropriate without bad language.

I’ve always found this image immensely touching. But looking this time, I actually think these are civvies. The lapels are way wider than even my 1940s SDBs. There’s a waistcoat too. Somehow more poignant though—an outfit for a liberty call that never came.

An officer’s woolen uniform still hangs in a closet deep within the wreck of battleship USS Arizona, famously lost during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the 7th of December, 1941. Of the just over fifteen hundred men aboard the vessel at the time, 1,177 of them perished, with the remains of only around one hundred of the lost ever recovered. The wreck of the much revered warship now acts as a tomb for the rest on the bottom of the harbor, and as such is protected heavily against visits by divers of any kind. During 2016 however, an expedition into the ship by ROV conducted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution took some of the only existing photographs of the interior of Arizona, their goals being primarily to assess the condition of her remains in as non intrusive a way as possible. Among the views captured during this effort are many strikingly personal objects such as this, all of which represent in some ways an entire world which ended in mere hours on a quiet Sunday morning more than 80 years ago.

Many of the men I know who are amazing, and would make amazing husbands for women, live in just the most inconvenient locations. 90% are congregated in Texas and don't want to leave. Women don't want to live in Texas. The other 10% are in Canada. Women don't want to live in Canada. Basically, your options are permanent Summer or permanent Winter. This is a problem because we all know women love Autumn the most.

Some people unfairly criticised this scene in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show, where he hid Leia under a trench coat, but this level of subterfuge is absolutely consistent for a guy whose alias is Ben Kenobi, wears robes indistguinshable from a jedi's, & hides on his enemy's home planet.
