I'm on team sunshine, but with that picture of the trucker I don't think you guys need a counterargument yet. Team sunshine has only really offered a hypothesis to explain away the plain implication of the photo: the sun is trashing his skin. Rather, team sunshine has to do more work to establish that auto glass is rendering the sun harmful to skin. The best argument in your favour is just the photo itself.

What is the best pro-sunscreen or anti-sunlight argument against this?
J͎Λ͎Y͎@TakeThiamine

This infamous photo comes from a 2012 case report in the NEJM titled “Unilateral Dermatoheliosis.” It documents a 69-year-old delivery truck driver who spent 28 years with the left side of his face exposed to the sun through his side window. And it doesn’t indict the sun so much as it indicts chronic, unnatural, one-sided UVA-heavy exposure. Tempered car glass windows selectively filter ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UVB (burning rays; shorter wavelengths) are mostly blocked by standard glass while 70-80% of UVA (aging rays; longer wavelengths) largely pass through unchanged. That means car glass skews the natural profile of sunlight: you don’t feel the burn as easily and therefore get continued, cumulative damage. Regardless, the issue here is this guy is sitting in one place blasting his face with the sun for several consecutive hours, day in, day out. Does this mean the sun is bad? No. Does this mean most sunscreens are good? Definitely not. For most of human evolutionary history, vitamin D was produced primarily through cutaneous synthesis, with UVB radiation—roughly 290–315 nm, especially around 295–300 nm—acting on 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin to form previtamin D3, which then thermally isomerizes into vitamin D3. Natural dietary sources (fatty fish, egg yolks, liver) are extremely limited and could never meet daily needs for most populations without regular sun exposure. Food fortification and widespread supplementation are 20th-century inventions. Yet rates of skin cancer—especially melanoma—have increased 10-17x since the 1950s. Commercial sunscreens weren’t a thing until the ‘40s. Fortification wasn’t a thing until the ‘30s. Clearly there’s more going on here. We evolved under the sun, but under very different exposure patterns than people today. We used to get constant moderate exposure, now we stay indoors most of the day and go out on vacation to burn. Burning—and the resulting DNA damage from it—is bad. And what makes someone more prone to burning? Being overexposed and overloaded in PUFAs. This isn’t esoteric, it’s well-supported by the biochemistry of lipid peroxidation: • PUFAs contain multiple double bonds that are highly reactive. When UV radiation hits the skin, it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that "attack" these double bonds. • This interaction creates a cascading chain reaction of lipid radicals, producing toxic byproducts like malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-HNE. These byproducts are what trigger the inflammatory response we recognize as a sunburn.  • In contrast, saturated fats have no double bonds and are much more stable under the heat and oxidative stress of the sun. So what’s the solution? 1. Limit exposure until you build some resilience. 2. Eat better. Stored PUFA takes years to detox, so you’ll have to tread somewhat lightly if you’re just beginning to stop eating garbage food. 3. Wear thin, white, cotton long sleeves and a hat. 4. Use a mineral-based, seed oil-free sunscreen (zinc oxide). The practical takeaway is simple: avoid burning, favor regular moderate exposure over binge exposure, wear protective clothing when needed, and use a clean mineral sunscreen when you can’t control how much sun you’re getting.

This is going to be historic. Pictured here is the next Premier of BC. Tickets are sold out, but we are working on securing a new, larger venue. This will be streamed across independent news networks in Canada - but nothing beats seeing candidates debate ideas in person!

@NVanCaroline Neat, here is Caroline Elliott calling someone's views "abhorrent" for opposing SOGI-123 and Bill C-4 fake "conversion therapy" ban pushed by the Justin Trudeau Liberals. x.com/tomreinhart197…
Tom Reinhart@tomreinhart1978

@KarlDHarrison Caroline called Laurie Throness abhorrent when he fought against SOGI and the conversion therapy ban that made counselling illegal, have you seen this? She is NOT a conservative

For too long, the NDP has put ideology ahead of education. Parents and students deserve schools that teach reading and math, not activism. When I become premier, SOGI will be repealed. 👉 If you agree, sign here: WinForBC.ca

@KarinLitzcke It used to bother me alot, but I now think it's a fair barrier. It's really a test of fundraising prowess, which is absolutely an essential part of any successful political campaign.

Let's talk about making political leadership available only to people who either have a lot of money or can raise a lot of money (and kudos to those who can - it's never been one of my superpowers). Is this a good thing, a bad thing, or just necessary? timescolonist.com/local-news/sev…

@IanPatonDelta Who knows all the candidates? I'm enmeshed as one can be and the question barely makes sense to me. There is no way they got a credible sample.

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Caroline Elliot tonight. I must say, I can't at all understand the criticism I'm seeing from mutuals that Caroline is a liberal. She's consistently taking strong, conservative positions on even the most challenging of issues: gender, DRIPA, race-based hiring, etc. These aren't newly adopted positions for her, either, and she's managed to express such while succeeding in business and politics - an extremely difficult venture. The event in Maple Ridge was her fourth stop of the day, including a trip to the island - so she's a hard worker and energetic. Despite the itinerary, she was well composed and on time. She responded smartly, gracefully and with initiative to the particularities of the venue and the crowd gathered. She took the time to meet and speak with literally every person who came out, despite her wranglers periodic efforts to remind her of the constraints of her schedule. In conversation Elliot came across as open, genuine, and thoughtful. She's also a parent of school-age children, and young enough to understand the troubles this and the next generation are facing. When asked about conflicts in the caucus - the great variety of views and ideas - she spoke about listening and giving MLAs a proper avenue for communicating differences. I'm sum, an excellent candidate. I am still getting to know all the candidates and will keep my ears open, but I'm excited that someone of Caroline's calibre and character is running. She poses a foil for the usual smear tactics of the NDP, and through temperament and experience gives us a real chance of forming government. If she is so elected and so governs, BC would have among the most conservative governments on the continent on key issues. That's something I'd be proud to support.

@DNSWilson @BC_Citcon And that is why they will loose. Until we get an actual Conservative Party. Too bad, guess the suffering has to continue until, the morale improves. We’ve been fucked too many times to count, now having to be talked into this liberal party…no.

Maya's doctors believe she no longer has hydrocephalus - the dangerous build-up of cerebral fluid in the brain - and have removed the draining apparatus from her skull. In recent weeks, Maya has been responsively squeezing a nurse's hand and has appeared to be attentive to her favourite television shows. Maya continues to hit milestone after extraordinary milestone. She is still healing! If I can impose upon you, please pray for Maya's continued recovery 🙏 Dear Lord, thank You for this great work You have already done. If it is Your will, please continue to heal Maya. Please, let her family hear her laughter again; please let the world see her great character again; that Your name may be glorified and Your power be revealed to all with eyes to see. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Latest update on Maya Gebala (Tumbler Ridge) Here’s the most recent update on Maya. The neurosurgical team spoke with me today and they’re very happy with the output from Maya’s EVD. Over the past five days they’ve gradually challenged the drain, and there has been virtually no CSF draining during that time. Because of this, the neurosurgeons strongly believe that Maya no longer has hydrocephalus. With that in mind, the decision was made today to remove the drain. They explained that they’re giving her what they call a “brain holiday,” allowing her brain some time to rest while also reducing the risk of infection before her upcoming surgery to place the synthetic skull prosthetic back in. When the time comes for that surgery, they will assess everything in the OR using ultrasound. Based on what they see, they will decide whether to place the EVD back in or if she may not need it at all. Little by little we’re getting there, Maya Bear 🐻❤️

@DNSWilson Because it's an election don and she'll say whatever needs to be said to win. Not worried about her words, we're worried about her follow through and her past shows a much different look than what she's saying today.

Bro, wth. I'm starting to realize you don't remember why you followed me in the first place. I didn't put my personal and professional relationahips on the line to support the Freedom Convoy to become some two-bit paid influencer. Please, man. I thought what we all went through was worth more than this.

I was just joking about the weight - I've put on a lot of weight and I'm just embarrassed by it. I can't say I was enamoured with the BC Liberals in recent years, but there really was no other home for conservatives. I can't take her participation there as disqualifying. I tend to agree with you about safe supply, but thinking it might be useful on an individual case is different than supporting a provincial policy advancing it as a blanket solution.

I didn't raise the issue of weight Don, you did. 1. The BC Liberals were a liberal party. I see that Liberal @kevinfalcon has retained the name for future use. Christy Clark (married of course to the election fraudster Mark Marissen for a time) was a candidate for the Fed Libs and supports Carney. Campbell is sticking around like a bad smell and supporting Elliott. 2. So she either follows orders or speaks what she believes. Which is it Don? 3. Safe supply is no solution for any addict. Ultimately, not taking the drugs is the only solution. 4. So she didn't get on board with the Conservatives at the last election. There you have it. Wake up man.
