Highways Minister @AadhavArjuna in a speech said “Mayors are obstructing civic works like solid waste management, sewerage clean up, power cuts and water supply, to cause bad name to the govt.” Is it factual? Mayors nor councillors have any power over the executive authority of a civic body. Executive head of GCC is the GCC commissioner who is a state govt official coming under the MAWS dept headed by chief minister C Joseph Vijay. Mayors and councillors are public representatives within GCC, who can only chair zonal meetings and council meetings, and approve public projects besides going on inspections. They have no authoritative say over the daily execution and administration. Moreover, TANGEDCO is a separate state govt department with a minister. It doesn’t even come under the Greater Chennai Corporation. Whatever said by the minister is not factual.
