Medical care in ICE detention has been an issue for decades, but it’s getting worse. Facilities are badly overcrowded and the Trump admin’s no-release policies mean even people with serious medical problems are being detained for months, like this 23-year-old nursing student.

Un hombre sabio, el papa Francisco, dijo algo que resulta sumamente pertinente en este momento: “La guerra es el mayor fracaso de la humanidad. No hay futuro en la destrucción sino en la fraternidad. La paz no es solo ausencia de guerra es la construcción de la justicia”. México será siempre factor de paz. Nuestra Constitución, en su artículo 89 fracción X, enumera los 8 principios con base en los cuales el Poder Ejecutivo Federal debe conducir la política exterior de México: la autodeterminación de los pueblos; la no intervención; la solución pacífica de controversias; la proscripción de la amenaza o el uso de la fuerza en las relaciones internacionales; la igualdad jurídica de los Estados; la cooperación internacional para el desarrollo; el respeto, la protección y promoción de los derechos humanos y la lucha por la paz y la seguridad internacionales. Naciones Unidas debe ser hoy más que nunca la institución que llame a la construcción de la paz.

Mariana exemplifies the situation of many of the people the Trump admin is trying to deport. In his first term, only the Supreme Court stopped him from stripping her of status. We all benefit as Americans from having people like her around. Congress needs to pass the Dream Act.
