Many curiosities persist over the widely ridiculed 'equity card' system at the 2026 NDP leadership convention. Despite numerous clips going viral of attendees expressing disappointment over the cards and their functions, a last minute resolution was passed to expand the system.

I worry about the direction Canada is taking. Since 2008, governments have intervened in housing to keep the bubble afloat, protecting property holders who were also the biggest voters. When wages couldn't keep pace, the answer was more proposed interventions: basic income, public grocery stores, each one finding ways to prop up the people crushed by the last policy failure. No one planned a command economy. But when every problem is solved by expanding state control, and every expansion wins votes, you end up in the same place. Add increased surveillance powers, more centalization of power, and a pivot away from the US toward regimes like China, and the trajectory doesn't look good.

btw, if you’re unfamiliar with the oeuvre of Tanya Tagaq, the main singer in this Juno clip, enjoy the lyrics to her song, “Colonizer” (the video for which features scenes of a burning church). In Canada, we call this musical genre, “reconciliation” youtube.com/watch?v=8LbWNi…

He was Air Canada’s CFO during the 2008-09 financial crash. He took over as CEO in 2021 when air travel was decimated. Just 6 weeks ago Air Canada financial results showed record revenue. But now he’s out because he didn’t do a video in French torontosun.com/opinion/column…

🧵Alot of people are having a good laugh right now at the antics at the convention of Canada's New Democratic Party (the NDP). I particular, this woman, who has chaired the convention. Her name is Adrienne Smith, and while the clips may be funny, there is nothing funny about her agenda or the influence she wields. 1/9

One of the battiest things I’ve ever seen. They/them with hitler-youth haircut bickers with Kafiyeh woman over “gender equity cards” this is not an intersectionality-club meeting at Brandeis or Colgate. This is the @NDP, a (formerly) mainstream Cdn political party

HAPPENING NOW: There's surprising amount of disagreement and intellectual diversity at the 2026 NDP leadership convention, but one matter everyone seems to agree on is that they hate the "equity cards."

An important question. The answers I can come up with: some journalists are not hungry or curious enough and investigative journalism takes more money and time than most newsrooms are spending. Political/ideological bias could also be part of it. Journalism certainly shouldn't be treated as a clock-in, clock-out job though. It requires curiosity and a burning desire to know the truth about everything.

The PM’s wife advises a billion-dollar critical minerals company. The PM’s budget just gave $2 billion to critical minerals. Why is nobody is talking about this? 🚨🇨🇦

The problem David Eby has is that while he recoils at the potential brand damage Avi Lewis could do, he's got enough Avi Lewis fans in his caucus to limit his course of action. That's why when the Saskatchewan and Alberta NDP were quick to distance themselves, he had to put out a milquetoast thread that tries to walk some sort of line between batshit crazy and normal.

On this day in 1867, the British North America Act received Royal Assent in British Parliament, laying the legal foundation for the Dominion of Canada, which would come into force on July 1. The BNA Act established Canada’s federal structure, dividing powers between Parliament and the provinces, while also providing protections for minority rights—most notably in education. These were a defining feature of the new Constitution, intended to accommodate religious and linguistic differences and ease rivalries inherited from the old world. The preamble, invoking a constitution “similar in Principle to that of the United Kingdom,” has long been understood as a guiding statement of Canada’s constitutional tradition. Beyond Canada, the BNA Act influenced federal systems across the British Empire, including Australia’s federation in 1901. Though amended over time, it remains at the core of Canada’s Constitution, having been renamed the Constitution Act, 1867 in 1982.

All in the family: B.C. NDP Premier David Eby's housing and municipalities minister Christine Boyle is godmother to one of Eby's children. Boyle is also part of the Lewis-Klein clan: Husband Seth Klein's sister Naomi is wife of new NDP leader Avi Lewis. #bcpoli #cdnpoli

The truth is that provincial NDP leaders risk splitting their base by attacking Avi Lewis. No one more so than David Eby. The federal NDP are bat shit crazy but so is a not insignificant part of the NDP provincial base. Those free Palestine rallies aren't populated by conservatives. The crazy public sector unions? NDP base. The view that a repeat violent offender is a victim? Yep, NDP base. Legal drug advocates. You bet your ass they're dippers. Either Eby gives in or the Greens are going to grow.
