My uncle paid off his house in 2009. Called his kids over that night. Said he finally did it. Retired in 2021 thinking he was free. Property taxes were $4,800 a year when he bought. By 2023 they were $13,200. Fixed income. Social Security check of $1,600 a month. $1,100 of it going to property taxes alone. He held on as long as he could. Sold it last year. The house he paid off. The house he raised his kids in. The house he thought was finally his. Had to sell it not because he couldn’t afford the mortgage. There was no mortgage. Had to sell it because the government kept sending bills on something he already owned. He’s renting now at 71. After 40 years of working toward something he no longer has. You never really own anything in America. You just get a longer grace period than everyone else.
