The Shashemene "Scorched Earth" Massacre The Premeditated "Wipe" (The Modus Operandi) Following the assassination of singer Hachalu Hundessa, organised groups (commonly identified as Qeerroo) launched a coordinated strike in Shashemene and other Oromia towns (Arsi, Bale, Ziway). The "Hit Lists": Reports from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and survivor testimonies confirmed that attackers moved with prepared lists of names and specific house numbers. They did not attack indiscriminately; they targeted ethnic Amharas, Guraghes, and Orthodox Christians of various ethnicities. The ID Check: In many instances, victims were stopped and forced to show their identification cards. If the "Ethnic" field on their ID or their linguistic ability indicated they were Amhara or "non-indigenous," they were executed on the spot. The Cruelty: Victims were not just killed; they were subjected to ritualistic brutality. Reports documented beheadings, the dismemberment of bodies in front of family members, and victims being burned alive inside their businesses. The Death Toll and Demographic Erasure Casualties: While the government officially cited 166-239 deaths across the region, independent monitors and local religious institutions (specifically the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church) documented over 200 deaths in Shashemene alone. Property Destruction: The town’s commercial center—largely built and owned by the Amhara and Guraghe merchant classes—was systematically razed. Over 3,000 businesses and homes were looted and burned. This was "Economic Deletion": removing the material basis for these communities to exist in the region. Over 9,000 survivors fled to military camps or back to the Amhara region, creating a permanent demographic shift in the town. 📖 Source: EHRC 2020 Investigation / Human Rights Watch (2021) "World Report: Ethiopia."

MAI KADRA, ETHIOPIA - MARCH 05, 2021: Gashaw Birhanu, 43 of Mai Kadra joined other survivors of the deadly attacks at Mai Kadra to give accounts to a journalist at Abune Aregawi Church on March 5, 2021. Gashaw escaped an attack by seven men with sticks but lost his front teeth during the violence that occurred between November 6 thru 10, 2020 in Mai Kadra. Gashaw, who is ethnically Amhara, was embraced by Tigrayan leadership who believed him to be Tigrayan and was subsequently invited to two closed-door meetings of the Tigrayan community in Mai Kadra that took place prior to the attack on the ENDF Northern Command base on November 3, which sparked a regional conflict. Gashaw said the topics of discussion were survival of the upcoming conflict, the process of exterminating the Amhara, and taking control the resources of the region. According to interviews conducted in recent days with several dozen victims, witnesses and local officials, around 1,300 (now over 1600) ethnic Amharas were killed during a series of attacks by the Samri TPLF (Tigray People’s Liberation Front) Youth Group, TPLF militia and local Tigrayan police from November 6 to November 10, 2021. Over the course of four days, Samri youth from several towns in Tigray, in addition to TPLF militia and local police, killed farm workers on farms owned by TPLF-affiliated farmer/investors before moving onto Mai Kadra itself, conducting door-to-door searches for ethnic Amharas. Most victims were slashed or hacked; many victims who survived the initial attacks with bladed weapons were shot to death. The violence occurred during a wider conflict between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF that ignited on November 4, 2020, when forces aligned with the TPLF attacked the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Northern Command headquarters in Mekelle, the capital city of the Tigray region along with 4 other bases and numerous soft targets in Tigray and the Amhara region. Most people will say they acknowledge the massacre at Mai Kadra and Humera as beginning on October 9, 2020. But for those day laborers and survivors on the ground I interviewed who struggled to survive either hiding in the roofs of homes, in the fields or who fled the city, the slaughter began much earlier in the week, starting on November 3. It is in the memory of the fallen, some of the first victims of mass ethnic cleansing in the 2020 - 2022 Ethio- Tigray that I post this week. May the truth never be buried or forgotten…. For the past few years Ethiopians, particularly of the Amhara ethnicity have been traumatized and perpetually gaslit by those who tried to deny and conceal the massacre at Mai Kadra. Please let us remember the victims and widows like Agere Getnet and the others who lost loved ones during the Mai Kadra Massacre on 11/3-10, 2020. The Coverage below was completed in March of 2021 following visits to Mai Kadra and Humera in the Amhara Region. MAI KADRA, ETHIOPIA - MARCH 05, 2021: Agere Getnet and several widows mourn their loved ones at the edge of the mass graves at Abune Aregawi Ethiopian Orthodox Church on March 5, 2021 in Mai Kadra, Ethiopia. Ms. Getnet was leaving the graves of her husband, his younger brother and nephew, who were all killed during the attacks on Amhara in Mai Kadra from November 6 through 10th, 2021. According to the mayor of Mai Kadra, Charu Hagos, and Abrihu Fantahun, head of the Kebele 01 administrative area, the mass graves contain the remains of over 1,300 (now 1600) ethnic Amharas killed during the premeditated ethnic cleansing of Ethnic Amharas by the Samri TPLF Youth Group, TPLF militia and local Tigrayan police from November 6 to November 10, 2021. Over the course of the 4 days starting on November 6, the most violent of those days being November 9-10, Samri youth from several towns in Tigray, in addition to TPLF militia and local police, killed farm workers and day laborers on farms owned by TPLF affiliated farmer/investors and retired military leaders before moving onto Kebele 1 of Mai Kadra itself conducting door to door searches for ethnic Amharas while targeting businesses already marked as belonging to Amharas. Most victims were slashed or hacked while victims who survived the initial attacks with bladed weapons were shot to death. In the days that followed November 10th, the dead were found in the streets, in ditches, in holes dug by TPLF officials and strewn throughout the farmlands where they worked. As of the date of this filing (March 6, 2021), remains of those murdered are still being discovered in and around the city of Mai Kadra. The violence occurred during a wider conflict between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF that ignited on November 3, 2020, when forces aligned with the TPLF and TPLF Commandos attacked 5 bases of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF).
