New York Senate bill that would ban most sports, political & stock-based event contracts just passed favorably out of the Gaming committee. It would do a lot to hinder/block PM operations in New York but oddly, there is no tax or license fee component to the bill. Only a few weeks remain in the session.

🚨 Have not posted on here in awhile! Logging on to share some exciting personal news: I’m joining @FortuneMagazine soon as tech correspondent. I’ll still be based in the SF area, keeping a close eye on the industry's biggest players and most defining trends. Naturally, a major focus of my coverage will continue to be artificial intelligence and the massive infrastructure behind it. If you work at Amazon, Microsoft or any of the leading companies driving this space, I'd love to chat. You can reach me securely on Signal at seb.39. (I'll share my Fortune email address once it's up and running). I’m deeply grateful for my seven years at The Wall Street Journal, where I was fortunate to write about Amazon, Microsoft, AI, cloud computing and other topics. I’m thankful to all of my wonderful former colleagues there, as well as the many sources that helped shape my stories. You can follow me here, as well as LinkedIn and Bluesky @sebasaherrera.bsky.social. Let’s keep the conversation going at Fortune!

Oh boy -> Sports Illustrated deleted the profile and all articles of a writer, after Sportico editor Dan Bernstein accused Sports Illustrated of plagiarism (and using AI to help write the articles) "After this story initially ran, Sports Illustrated said the deleted content had been produced by an “independent publisher.” The predictions market On SI site was managed by an independent publisher who is expected to abide by Sports Illustrated’s editorial guidelines. Sports Illustrated became aware of a violation of those guidelines in regards to the use of AI and immediately took steps internally to address this violation, including cutting ties with the publisher.” "The company’s hasty move to scrub an entire writer and their backlog from Sports Illustrated‘s site is significant in light of the iconic sports brand’s not-too-distant history of AI scandal. Back in 2023, Futurism published an investigation revealing that Sports Illustrated, then owned by The Arena Group, had published a huge number of product review articles bylined by completely fabricated writers with AI-generated profile pictures." futurism.com/artificial-int…

NEW: The NYT’s standards editor Susan Wessling sent out a memo today saying staff members cannot bet on prediction markets on subjects they cover, are likely to cover or abuse non-public info about the Times to make money. “This is a good moment to make clear that betting on the outcome of news events on the prediction markets is a violation of our principles and ethical guidance and is not permitted.”

ABC News has now taken all FiveThirtyEight articles completely offline. They now redirect to abcnews dot com/politics. A needless erasure of thousands of pages of knowledge.

ICYMI: The Minnesota legislature passed a bill that would ban prediction markets, becoming the first state to explicitly outlaw these platforms; bill language prohibits event contracts on sports, politics and pop culture events; if signed/allowed to pass into law, effective date is Aug. 1; PMs and/or the CFTC are set to file challenge in court before then
