Gene & Georgetti is suing SSP America in Cook County Circuit Court. The complaint, filed on May 15, accuses the concession operator of hijacking the iconic steakhouse’s legendary name, recipes, and reputation to win the Gene’s Bistro concession at Midway Airport, then trying to terminate the partnership five years into a twenty-year agreement. They took the branding, expertise, and COVID fee relief, then allegedly shorted payments while the menu quality crashed. Reviews complained of food poisoning and called the place a joke. The steakhouse is demanding full contract enforcement, an injunction blocking use of its trademarks and trade secrets, unpaid fees, and damages exceeding $50,000. Chicago’s independent restaurants are already getting crushed by closures and skyrocketing operating costs. This is exactly how we lose the legendary local institutions that make Chicago, Chicago. Americans are paying over $5/gallon in Illinois right now $5.05 to $5.08 average statewide, even higher in Chicago, because of YOUR policies, not President Trump. The President of the United States doesn't set pump prices, you dishonest clown. Global oil markets and supply disruptions do. Trump even said the spike was less bad than expected. But you? You're out here grandstanding while Illinois drivers get absolutely screwed by YOU. If you suspended ALL your Illinois gas taxes like a real human would, we'd be paying $3.80–$4.30/gallon instead. Illinois state motor fuel tax alone is 48.3¢ right now, jumping to 49.6¢ on July 1 thanks to the automatic inflation hike YOU signed into the 2019 Rebuild Illinois scam. That's nearly 50 cents PER GALLON you’re stealing from us on top of the federal 18.4¢, your prepaid sales tax (13-17¢+), local Chicago/Cook County add-ons, and fees. Total tax burden? Over 85¢ per gallon, second highest in America. You doubled the gas tax from 19¢ to 38¢+ back then and locked in these endless automatic increases so you never have to vote on it again. That's not leadership, THAT IS THEFT‼️also that's predatory double-taxing of working Illinois families while you sit in your mansion.
