The reason Andrew T*te and his ilk appeal to young men is because he provides a role model to boys who have none, or lack purpose or direction; he tells insecure kids they can be strong and powerful if they are like him. While lessons can be useful, the real way tackle this is to provide better models of meaning and purpose to them; teach them to see themselves as scientists, athletes, scholars, musicians. That comes through school cultures that constantly demonstrate and model the value of those ambitions, and teach children to a high standard of success. Because feeling successful is the antidote to childish, cartoonish, cruel forms of masculinity and potency. A few assemblies on 'don't be sexist' won't scratch the surface of a child's self-image, but it will make adults feel like they have done something.

3/3 An example of this might be cold call. Even if a coachee agrees on its benefits, if others around them hold onto negative entrenched views it may be a barrier to classroom implementation. @mrbartonmaths @ollie_lovell

2/3 ...even if we assume you were able to help a coachee build a new mental model, if other colleagues in their community actively fight against this, the social pressure to conform to the norms of the community may outweigh the other mechanisms which make IC effective.

1/3 After some great training with @nickpointer_ on instructional coaching, it helped me reflect on why instructional coaching is more likely to fail without agreed upon principles for teaching and learning in a school...

@MathsWithMsB Wow, I hadn’t realized it was already large scale. It certainly seems that “productive struggle” requires a clear definition because it doesn’t seem at all glance to align with the mechanisms suggested by Kapur for productive failure.

@greg_ashman Hi Greg, I remember that you have tweeted about productive failure in the past. Can I ask whether you’re aware of how well replicated it has been in recent studies? My belief is that it hasn’t been replicated and I’m hoping to have that verified.

@MathsWithMsB Thanks for linking this. I’d be interested to see if the results are the same on a wider scale.

@mrbartonmaths Craig, are you aware of any research providing evidence of improved learning for tip 73 - consider no number questions? I’m worried about trialing it without knowing the evidence base behind it.

@PaulRodrigo2718 Unfortunately I don’t have anything like this, and haven’t seen anything. An interesting thought though - good luck with finding/making.

I remember someone had a display for the Casio CG50 (Graphical Display Calculator). I'm looking to re-vamp my displays and envision a Calculator that is as tall as the door. If anyone can remember or has some files for this then I would greatly appreciate you sharing!
