Most of what we “see” in 3D #microscopy is wrong. But a new preprint from the lab driven by Anna Pittman comes to the rescue. Hard truth: humans are bad at seeing 3D on screens. We collapse volumes, look at image slices and pretend it’s enough. But, a model can interrogate the full 3D structure. Rather than work with black box , Anna rebuilt a classic (bag-of-visual-words) for 3D: with decisions you can actually understand. A huge win for interpretability and we use that power to dissect neuronal chromatin organization 🚀 She’s on the data scientist job market! Don’t miss her! @EricTopol Cycling is fascinating. I bet you get the initial dip from casual cyclists getting exercise on bike paths, then vehicle fatalities offset the fitness gains as people train on the road more, then it decreases again for elite athletes who have protected training routes.

Physical activity and the reduction of all-cause mortality, from 2 very large prospective cohorts 1. The relationship is non-linear, suggesting a threshold effect for many types of exercise as seen below
