One silver lining of Trump/Bibi's stupid Iranian debacle and the energy and resource crisis it has unleashed is that it is suggesting (just like the Russia-Ukraine war has been) that cheap projectiles enabled most of all by the massive reduction in the cost of microprocessors are making it easier for smaller countries to defend against larger ones. One has to hope that after a few more debacles like this, this idea will become more and more internalized. Whether this trend will save Taiwan I'm not sure because Taiwan seems so small that a massive concentration of Chinese firepower seems likely to overwhelm it. P.S. my take isn't in any way meant as a celebration of the Iranian regime's ability to survive per se. I really wish it gone. However. I just don't think evil is worth eradicating at all cost.

Wow, such effect sizes in medicine are rare. And this speaks volumes about how big a role the misfiring immune system plays in aging.

JP Morgan published a ranking of how competitive Argentine industries are by category, from world frontier to globally unviable. And to no one's surprise, the textile industry, which was among the most protected for decades, is the worst of all 💀

Just heard from a woman at the entrance control of a concert in Marseille that they don't scan QR codes on e-tickets because they "don't want to help Bernard Arnault", who is a famous French billionaire. It's really so sad that so much good in the world is impeded by either clueless right-wing zealots who worship force and hierarchy and hate people who don't look like them or by left-wing zealots who hate commerce and technology.

This is arguably an absolutely massive paper. First, as the abstract says, it probably explains sexual reproduction. Clonal mutations accumulate over time to the point when further clonal reproduction becomes untenable. Perhaps, more importantly, this suggests that the role of mutations in the aging process is greatly overstated, if a single animal can be recloned 58 times. And these were mice whose DNA repair machinery is worse than in humans. The likelihood that most of what we know as aging is an epigenetically programmed process becomes higher.

Another finding nicely illustrating that archaic religions and conservative morality are nonsense.

A truck carrying antiprotons will drive across Europe. A team at CERN just transported antimatter across the laboratory's campus in a truck. Literally. 92 antiprotons packed into a portable trap weighing one tonne. As everyone knows, antimatter annihilates on contact with ordinary matter - which is basically everything. The final destination is Germany: Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. An extraordinary delivery in the history of road transport. home.cern/news/press-rel…

Advent of LLMs hasn't raised the number of NBER working papers above trend. (Or submissions to top journals: next tweet). Why? Probably because LLMs substitute for good RAs, but not for good ideas. And RA labor supply hasn't been the binding constraint in economic scholarship.

One in four people raised Muslim have left Islam, which means that all polls of Muslim opinion substantially understate the degree of Muslim immigrant assimilation since leaving Islam is a type of assimilation. In my post today I document how big this bias...

From history classes at school most people would get the impression that governments only started massively intervening in the economy in the 20th century. However, as Anton Howes nicely demonstrates here, after the Great Plague, governments embarked on drastic attempts to regulate work and wages in an attempt to prevent employers from having to compete for now much less numerous workers.

It’s amazing to me how many resources must be devoted to geopolitical strategy, intelligence gathering, and war planning in the US and Russia; and yet the two most high-profile wars of the last five years involve a military superpower attempting a blitzkrieg decapitation of an opponent and appearing shocked and stunned and flummoxed when the attacked adversary doesn’t surrender but actually fights back

Something is clearly out of balance when someone earning £10k and someone earning £140k take home the same net amount. No wonder so many hard-working people and entrepreneurs are leaving the UK. Would you want to live in a country that punishes hard work and jobs creation?
