@aussiewongm @RM_Transit 88 level crossings removed in just over 10 years. Plus the open space under the skyrail. We did sell our port to pay for it, so it isn't free.

@RM_Transit Melbourne, Australia was running 5 minute peak hour suburban headways through triple track level crossings for decades before they started a concerted effort to get rid of them. wongm.com/2016/03/union-…

Lets run more trains! Ok, well it makes sense for them to be smaller then! Ok, but then they would have less capacity. Which is why we are running them more often? But, we have like 10 level crossings?

@Steen_Dr @ajmnsaus @expedtadam I had to catch a bus to primary school, now my sister gets the kids grandparents to drop the her kids of to school and pick up regularly. They do ride their bikes to school sometimes. Many more cars on the roads now. I think it's parents and grandparents wanting to be there more.

@ajmnsaus @expedtadam and, as more people drive their kids to school, it becomes more and more dangerous to walk to them. its always a parent who isn't watching who nearly runs over the crossing guards. we walked every day during primary school unless it was flogging down.

School drop off time seems way more congested than even when I went to high school. What's happened?

@arvobeer @undefinedhandle I think vicroads does the maintenance of main roads, so the properties on them don't actually pay as much in rates than the properties on the side streets, which the local council maintains.

@undefinedhandle Wtf do councils do with all the ratepayers money? Line their pockets? How hard is it to get a few blokes to mow the grass and clean up roads. I’ll join you lmk if you need help, wherever you are

this is a road sign at one of the busiest intersections in Melbourne. half the sign has fallen off, the other half unreadable due to graffiti, with the sign behind it also broken, leaning against it. and it's been like this for several months

The bigger question here - and the real problem - is why does it take 5 years to become an electrician? You're seriously gonna tell me the smartest white collar workers (soon to be unemployed) are effectively prohibited from getting employed as a lucrative tradesperson during the final period where human employment even matters, because of regulations? It's insane. A smart person could turbo charge this in 6 months. The West needs fast-track trades programs.
Jason Shuman@JasonrShuman

The US needs 500,000 new electricians this decade. Apprenticeships take 5 years. Microsoft’s Brad Smith says it’s the #1 thing slowing data center expansion. The AI bottleneck isn’t chips. It’s the trades.

@Llib7 I've got a mate who I have been telling for about 6 months that he needs to catch public transport to his work depot, where he can then drive to the worksite from there. It's funny watching him try to keep his cool. Yesterday his work told him to start doing just that.

@random_snakes I had a Maltese terrier as a kid. We got tired of having to take care of his long hair, so we clipped him. He looked amazing with both the long and short coat.

What happened was, she was chasing birds and some were on lily pads in very green, mossy pond that resembled grass. She dove onto a lily pad and came up howling and GREEN...And she had the full, long, white Maltese coat almost to the floor...It was a disaster!

Tonight’s dinner: Moroccan Harira soup, commonly served with some lemon wedges, cinnamon, dates, and bread. Something warm and comforting on a rainy evening.

@GarethDennis @thomasforth Homophily much, or the right person for the job? Back in the 80's here in Australia we had a Prime Minister that had the world record for drinking a yard glass.... very Australian for the time.

You may think I'm a dick, that's fine. Many do. But you probably agree that I'd be a decent person to be an Economic Advisor on Northern Powerhouse Rail. Interestingly, and my goodness I have a big pile of certificates, I would not have sufficient certificates to get the job.

@hot_rails @Urban_Immerser Power consumption dropped too. When I was a kid, us kids were our parents remote control aswell. The betamax had a remote control connected by cable that you had to plug in. 🤭

@Urban_Immerser It’s the same everywhere. CPI is structurally underestimated because of “quality adjustments”, eg, TVs aren’t actually any cheaper than in 1990, but they are *way* better, so this shows up as a strongly deflationary item in the basket.

@random_snakes @horrormuseum Yes, but I would say it needs to be more Blackadder MI6 season rather than a movie. So it would need a season 5 first. A James bond season of Blackadder would be comedy gold.

Finally hit the 63A house limit and tripped the main breaker today during the 3 hour free window. First time ever. EV charging, pool heat pump on, hot water heat pump, and oven, dryer, plus maybe some other stuff.
