@gwkj1 @timdanton Mixlr doesn't handle the VoIP side of things, so we need some separate service for that. We used to use Skype, but Zencastr (in theory) gives better audio quality for non-live listeners as it captures everyone's stream locally while we're talking, and creates a mixdown from that.

@timdanton @DarienGS curious- why do you use zencastr on top of mixlr rather than just mixlr?

If nothing else Mastodon is introducing people into the whole Open Source tradition of trying to be enthusiastic about something really bad that doesn't work at all because you don't want to be rude to the maintainers and the thing you really want to use doesn't work anymore.

@mixlr I appreciate that Mixlr gives advance warning of upcoming changes. But we still end up having to divert attention and resources away from our core activities to deal with a migration that we didn't ask for.

@DarienGS Hi Darien, thanks for getting back to me! Over the last 6 months we have been notifying users of the updates, but understand that these things can get missed and appreciate your feedback here. Please let us know how you get on with the new update! Thanks, Ellie

The 21st century professional experience: you try out fifteen different hosted services, you find one that fits your workflow, you cough up for the annual subscription, and you just pray that you'll get a year or two out of it before it hits you with some bullshit like this:

@bazzacollins I had that feeling, until I remembered that in the past ten years I've moved up several monitor sizes (and dot pitches).

Just had to bang up the text size in Outlook to large and now I feel about 73.

@bazzacollins I'm sorry, we're not permitted to discuss the details of the trial with non-jurors.

Spark has annoyed me so much I’m going back to Outlook for Mac. Why are there no decent email apps anywhere?

@bazzacollins Let's just say that the good citizens of McDonaldland can once again enjoy their burgers in peace... for now.

@DarienGS Yeah, I’ve tried Thunderbird before, but the walls to my office aren’t padded, and so therefore it seems risky. How many people have you sent down today?

@mixlr I haven't tried the new "channels" feature yet – I'll feed back any thoughts. In all cases though it's problematic for us subscribers to have no control over when and how our tools might abruptly change.

@DarienGS Hi Darien, we're sorry to hear you're unhappy with the recent updates to Mixlr. We'd really love to hear more about your feedback and experience, so please DM us with some further details and we can take a look. Thanks, Ellie

I do think that Mastodon is going to have to relent on that if it gets big. Surely the whole point of a social network is that you can start discussion threads among your own friends, rather than having to participate in a global free-for-all.

The only silver lining is that they're mostly different things. Although I do see something of Elon in Mastodon's proud refusal to implement a "quote tweet" equivalent.

I feel like everything I want to tweet is about what's wrong with Twitter, and everything I want to post on Mastodon is about what's wrong with Mastodon.

@ChrisChapman81 I'm not sure what my first broadcast was, but K9 looms large in my early memories of Who. I think I later acquired the Five Doctors on VHS and then again on DVD, but I've never bought anything on Blu-ray... sorry!

If anyone cares, I've been dipping a toe into Mastodon as @DarienGS@mastodon.social. So far I haven't posted anything there of real significance or substance, but... well, you see where I'm going with this.

Starting to feel about Musk & Twitter the same way I felt about Brexit & Britain: This is all fascinating, I just wish it wasn't happening on the social media platform I use.
