Will AI ever write a great novel? Maria Popova says: "AI will never write the great American or French poem because it hasn't suffered. Even if you attempt to make it suffer by writing a command to execute failure, it will already be succeeding at executing that failure. It will never understand what it means to collide with its own impossibility. I don't think it's necessary to suffer in order to create. However, I believe that from our suffering comes the restlessness to find meaning, beauty, and wonder; to give voice and shape to feelings that can be so isolating. Why do we read? We read to be moved and to be changed. AI can tell me about the Eye of the Scallop without me spending days poring over scientific journals and papers. But if I hadn't spent those days, I wouldn't have written about it with feeling. All writing that is truly moving is born of feeling and time. AI has neither; it's an instantaneous, unfeeling delivery of pure information."

Maria Popova is famous for her personal blog, The Marginalian, where she's published more than six million words. All the nights I've spent reading her writing were like an entry point into intellectual curiosity. She's introduced me to more writers and ideas than just about anybody, and this conversation is about how she does it. "The material we deal with may come from our observation and insight. As writers we don’t expel the result as raw material, we transmute it to provide what the reader most wants, an experience different from and richer than what he daily abides in life." - Sol Stein

"I'd rather have an ordinary character in extraordinary circumstances." Novelist Yann Martel on why he doesn't obsess over crafting quirky, highly detailed characters: "I want someone who is interested in the world, who's open, and then things happen to him — rather than someone who's really weird and curious and the banal happens. In Life of Pi, there's a shipwreck. In Beatrice and Virgil, the Holocaust. But those people are just ordinary people. They want to have their three meals a day. One might even say boring people, but then the appalling, the extraordinary happens to them. That's why I never describe my characters. Words are terrible at description. If you emphasize anything with someone's nose, you suddenly imagine this enormous nose. If you mention a little scar, you imagine this great cut. It becomes a caricature." The ordinary character is a mirror. We see ourselves in them, and through them, we discover something we couldn't have seen on our own.

@EvilGnomey @TheDavidVinc Frogstomp went double platinum in the States. Either the people were not teens / early 20's in the 90's, or listened to R&B or something.

@DarrylLeRoux @TheDavidVinc Why do Americans I see online never know who they are? I'm sure maybe a couple of their songs charted but never big mainstream like they were here why they set records in the music scene.

In regards to Mixtape - since that's all I see everyone talking about, I'll just say this. I'm the target audience, I graduated High School in 2000 afterall, so yeah, I was a teenager in the 90s. So I think it's pretty telling that the ONLY song on the entire soundtrack that I've actually heard was one from the 60s, "Have You Seen Her". I don't know what radio stations they were listening to, but I certainly wasn't listening to that noise. Where's Hole, the Foo Fighters, GreenDay, Offspring, Radio Head, The Smashing Pumpkins, REM? - and that's just off the top of my head.

One problem. Your event listeners aren’t working too well on the buttons when you press the tick, double tick or cross ones after a card / video has been shown. Sometimes it only registers after a few seconds or instantly. Sometimes you have to click the arrow on the correct one to go to the next word, sometimes it’s automatic.

What evil lives in your soul for you to even conjure a thought of these actions? Praying for those parents having to be there to hear this. To live through this ordeal yet again! Absolutely heartbreaking, to the point where my words are unable to find purchase to sooth them. Only God can offer that healing. I pray the Lord showers them with His grace, and that they know that He is Just, and Tanner will face justice on this earth. I pray that this man finds Christ before the next. May the Lord have mercy on his soul to the point of repentance.

BREAKING: FedEx driver who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murdering 7-year-old Athena Strand, has been sentenced to death. Tanner Horner snatched Athena while he was delivering a Barbie doll to her home in Paradise, Texas. At one point during the trial, jurors broke down in tears while hearing audio of Horner killing Athena after he told her to take off her shirt and said she was "really pretty." Athena repeatedly asked for her mother before she was killed. "Horner is then heard asking Athena to remove her shirt, and there are several moments when she says "no" and asks for her mom. That was followed by repeated sounds of crying, screaming and banging," NBC reported last month. Following three hours of deliberation today, Horner was sentenced to death by lethal injection.

Reading the Old Testament is a stake to my soul. We act is if we would live our lives in complete agreement to having the Lord speak to us at that present day, interacting with men in miraculous ways that would stop us in our tracks. But even though Israel had these prophets, and the Lord doing mighty works for their prosperity, we are met with constant verses of Israel going there own way, forsaking God, building idols to worship and a host of other blasphemous acts. God eventually turns them over to their lusts, and punishes them, repeatedly. Yet always stretches out his hand in reconciliation. He is slow to anger, quick to love. We think we would never be the Israelites in those scenarios, and yet here we are. Sinning daily. Rubbing the name of God in the mud due to our own pride. Andrew Murray (A fellow South African), wrote that pride is the starting point for all sin. We all possesses it in some shape or form. And just knowing that the chances of me acting in a similar manner as the Israelites, is heartbreaking. I pray for the Lords swift return.

Have you seen the amount of purchases on new vehicles? It's extremely low. Couple that with making them Electric with the added amount, you will have less being sold. Do you honestly think the South African public has the funds for this? I don't know a single person who has purchased a new car in the last 10 years. Not one.

SA’s crude oil and fuel imports are valued in the range of R250–350 billion ZAR per year. Massive trade imbalance could be fixed if more cars become electric and we can use our own fuel resources, including the sun.
