The reporter who wrote this NYT piece said in a post on LinkedIn thag he travelled to “Shiite villages” in Kohat Having lived my whole life (except for 6 years for university) in Pakistan this is the first time I am hearing this term being used Is the reporter claiming that there are zero Sunnis in these villages?

This cosmopolitan country with an incredible history is what you were recently bombing - bombing their schools, hospital, bridges, civilian infrastructure, & residential blocks. This volte face has only come about because you couldn’t disintegrate the country. It stood strong

As a Pakistani, I strongly condemn the IRCG's attack on the Indian merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz even after it was given clearance to proceed. Discounting the cheap antics and theatre by Indians, firing on a civilian vessel that received permission crosses a red line. Maritime security and the safety of innocent seafarers must be respected, regardless of regional tensions. No excuses for endangering lives at sea. Such reckless actions harm everyone navigating international waters.

But as the Field Marshal has often said: “Who dares, wins.” That visit and the subsequent high-level meetings in Tehran proved decisive. The Lebanon ceasefire was announced and in return, Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz. So what made Pakistan effective? Yes, Pakistan enjoys close ties with Iran and has also cultivated a working relationship with the Trump administration. But it was more than that. Pakistan’s standing as a nuclear state, combined with decisive leadership, made the difference. Unlike traditional mediators like Oman or Qatar, Pakistan brought unique leverage to the table. As a nuclear power with a strong military, it understands the geostrategic chessboard, the nuclear dimension, the proxy dynamics and the implications of regional security architectures, including its defense ties with Saudi Arabia. Islamabad used all these levers to keep the process on track. It conveyed a clear message to Tehran: a deal at this stage would be a strategic win. But if this window closed, the future would be far more uncertain and Iran might not retain the same leverage. At the same time, Pakistan prevailed upon the Trump administration to ensure that Israel did not act as a spoiler. In the end, Pakistan achieved what many thought was unthinkable. That is precisely why President Trump is so forthcoming in his praise.

In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz is an international strait. Under UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (which Iran has not ratified) all ships & aircraft enjoy freedom of navigation & overflight. No state can suspend this right. Rights are not subject to negotiation & renegotiation.
