🌱🦠 New preprint! What if soil is not just a passive background for plant diseases, but an active battlefield? Our review explores how soil structure & microbiomes shape the emergence & persistence of plant pathogens: doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.… Feedback & discussion welcome.

📖Published Trait-based responses of soil nematode communities to land use and climate change🌍 By linking nematode traits to soil moisture and pore structure, we find that the effect of future climate on nematode body traits is land-use dependent🪱 🔎 buff.ly/XnazV1f

NEW H. H. Flor Distinguished Review: All pathogens must sense that they have arrived at their host. This is a necessary part of infection in order to effect the changes in pathogen biology required to progress through their life cycle. Rachel Hammond et al. review recent literature and provide speculation as to how this might happen, by analogy to the five human senses. Read “The Five Senses: How Do Plant Pathogens Know They Found Their Host?” to learn more: doi.org/10.1094/MPMI-1… @Seb_EvdA

I See Dead Plants Podcast
Make sure you don't miss the latest episode of I See Dead Plants: sites.libsyn.com/416264/s5e3-si… I interviewed Dr Sam Markell of @NDSUExtension. We discussed @TheSCNCoalition and the work they are doing to combat the soybean cyst nematode. Photo shows Sam Markell (Far left) and @GregTylkaISU (third from left) representing the SCN coalition and Max Wenck (second from left) and Julianne Johnston (Far right) of Morgan Myers receiving an award called the silver anvil from @PRSA @CropNetwork @ncipmc @UnitedSoy @isuExtNews @DylanMangel @UMNExt @ISUExtension @UNLExtension @MUExtension @kstateextension @PurdueExtension @wisconsinext @MSUExtension @CFAES_OSU @okstate_ag @UKExtension @utextension @AR_Extension @LSUAgCenter @MSUExtService @ACESedu @UGAExtension @UF_IFAS @CUESNews @NCExtension @ccecornell @VACoopExt @alabamaED @travisfaske @SDSUExtension

🚨My opinion paper on the near future of genomics in root-knot nematodes was just published in @TrendsParasitol 📜 Of course, the future is, by nature, unpredictable, so unexpected findings will also probably emerge, aided by technological advances. ⤵️ authors.elsevier.com/a/1mg9T5Eb1xQw…

Through her lifelong, pioneering work on the Soil Food Web, she touched farmers, scientists, land stewards’, and citizens across the globe, transforming our understanding and relationship to soil as a living ecosystem that sustains all life above it. Save Soil & Cauvery Calling will dedicate & nurture 74 saplings in memory of Elaine and her care & concern for the Future of our planet. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and colleagues, and we cherish and celebrate the incredible work she has left behind. NEMATODE MONDAY: 2nd-stage juveniles are the infective stage of root-knot nematodes. Hatching from eggs in soil & migrating to invade root tips. These microscopic worms penetrate roots, establish feeding sites & become sedentary causing galls on roots @CropNetwork @SON_nemaweb
