We're at the threshold of understanding intelligence itself. The convergence of neuroscience and AI has created an unprecedented opportunity — but our research ecosystem isn't built to seize it. We need a new model that matches the scale of our ambition... 🧵

New white paper, emerging from the PL Neuro Connectomics Workshop, makes the case for a full human brain at synaptic resolution within 10 years

What is holding #neurotech back from being one of the greatest breakthroughs of our time? Infrastructure. We know neurotech works & the promise is huge, but getting from approval to access takes years — delaying both patient access & company capital. Our goal at PL Neuro is to break these bottlenecks. Here we share a roadmap for navigating this at the field level — because if we want to fix it, it’s going to be all hands on deck: zenodo.org/records/192400…

@BrackLab @LifeSciVC @DARPA @ARPA_H Concrete example: as an IARPA PM, I funded a buzzy VC-backed startup in a hot biotech IPO environment. The company underperformed on my program, so we cut them. If IARPA had an equity stake in the mix, I might have felt pressured to "play ball" until realizing a financial ROI.

@BrackLab @LifeSciVC @DARPA @ARPA_H Here's the failure mode: A typical ARPA R&D contract can be canceled for underperformance or just USG's convenience. If a performer awards equity to USG in exchange for maintenance of a contract through certain milestones, it creates a financial conflict of interest for USG.

Trump’s corporatism now involves the US demanding stakes in strategically important businesses that get any subsidies/grants…   Intel likely only the first of many. The big Q to me is when will they demand ownership in biopharma… like Moderna for its mRNA platform.  “We terminated your 22 BARDA grants, but we’ll reactivate them if you give us 10%…”

If your mission is to be the world's R&D leader in your technical area, and you are willing to work part of the time on other people's important problems, the sky's the limit on external funding availability - much of which can then be used to fund your passion projects.

A very well capitalized US biotech CEO told me yesterday: "Our investors are telling us to do everything in China now. Something that used to take 4 years and cost $100M in the US can now be done in 2 years for $20M by Chinese partners."

...which is another way of highlighting that the monetizability of neural interfaces is unlikely to scale with their throughput over the next 10+ years* *assuming a revenue model that is based on insurance reimbursements

My two cents: if you gave this capability to a neuroscientist, it would revolutionize how we study the non-human brain in a basic research setting. Clinically, I think this capability would far outpace our current best ideas about how to intervene in any human brain disorder.

What's the strongest current thesis for a problem that can only be solved by bidirectionally interfacing with *millions* of neurons in the human brain?

@michaelzlin Yep! MICrONS researchers at @BCM used the mesoscope to acquire the functional data that was then co-registered with neural circuit maps generated from EM. My comment was more about the ever expanding field of view by new microscopy tools.

Feels like we're reaching a tipping point for technologies that will unlock whole brain emulation, e.g. a team from China just announced an optical method for cellular resolution monitoring of activity across mesoscale networks than span the whole mouse brain. 👇

@JacquesCarolan Yes interesting! The first author's prior published work in this area was also mostly with Chinese institutions, with 1-2 Western collaborators (not from Imperial). I'd suggest the arc of progress seems driven by Chinese institutions... nature.com/articles/s4137…

@DavidAMarkowitz super impressive — small correction, it's china + uk (first and last author are at imperial college)

Devastating loss for neuroscience and ultimately for AI safety. Hearing that Lichtman's NIH grant to scale up EM connectomics by 10x beyond MICrONS was just canceled. Essential work for scaling EM to whole brains and for training a large workforce to support connectomics.
