@atsillypoint Seems mad he was never reconsidered after his injury. He was only 32 and had hit 2 centuries in his previous 6 innings when he played his last ODI in 2023

If you asked me in 2019 that Roy wouldn't be that relevant in the upcoming years, I'd have laughed at you. It's slightly unfortunate that we only catch Jason Roy in a few matches now. But everything and everyone has a peak time and peak timing to do peak stuff. Speaking of peak, can we talk about peak Jason Roy in ODIs. That man was one of the finest executioners against pace bowling. Those series in 2018/2019, and a follow-up of the World Cup 2019, Roy had a pivotal role in the success of England's giant ODI side. Ah, good memories Jason. Today, the way he played transported me back to his peak

@nimblehippo @WG_RumblePants This is the thing - under the current regime we just haven't been creating pitches that would suit OR. Having said that he's done surprisingly well on flat desks in the past. I came down on No because I don't think his talent makes up for the rumoured disruption to morale/unity

@WG_RumblePants I think we need to look more at horses for courses - on the right deck absolutely, but conditions and balance of the attack need to be factored in. In my mind I’m not sure we have anyone undroppable on the bowling front - pick on form and conditions

Let’s see. There seems to be an awful lot of noise about this out there - not sure any of it is warranted or why it’s happening. But what do people really think? Should Ollie Robinson be selected for England this summer?

@WG_RumblePants Thinking about players who were never massive names - I think Adam Hollioake could have thrived. Tricky to get away as a bowler and would have chipped with vital runs in the lower middle order. As a leftfield choice, do you think Martin Bicknell could have fetched a pretty penny?

I’ve been trying to think of 80s and 90s cricketers who missed out on the franchise revolution, but who may have been big money players (if they’d had the chance). So far I’ve got: Sir Viv Richards Sir Curtly Ambrose Courtney Walsh Sir Ian Botham Darren Gough Graham Gooch Robin Smith Kapil Dev Anil Kumble Mohammad Azharuddin Allan Donald Lance Klusener Javed Miandad Saeed Anwar Imran Khan Wasim Akram Waqar Younis Who have I missed out?

@saintlymark @WG_RumblePants Absolutely. My - possibly controversial - idea would be to put Rehan at 6, WK at 7 (Smith/Rew) and Stokes at 8. His batting hasn't been good recently but 8 would allow him to have a bit of fun, and he's so good batting with the tail, why not put him in amongst it?

@DavidFisherFolk @WG_RumblePants Oh I certainly think Ahmed (both of them) are worth bearing in mind, Rehan certainly not out of my thoughts for now. Stat lines look more like a batting all rounder at the moment but that’s fine.

@CricketopiaCom Finest? 🤣🤣🤣 If you want to watch the grass grow, watch Gooch play. The finest batsman for England in the 80s was David Gower. Botham, Lamb, Gatting, Smith, Stewart were better to watch than Gooch. Only Atherton was worse.

@saintlymark @WG_RumblePants Aah I see! Can see your point but I think with Root and Bethell there, we can afford a risk. Don't think there are many obviously better spinners around and he is a proper batter. So Rehan gets the nod for me. Farhan worth watching though, looks a good prospect

@DavidFisherFolk @WG_RumblePants I was picking a squad rather than an eleven at this point! Seems to be quite a bit of competition for the spinner spot right now, assuming it’s an all rounder type. Ahmed probably at the front of the queue, but I’m still nervous of picking such a young leggie

@saintlymark @WG_RumblePants Sneaking 12 players into the side would certainly give us an edge 😉 Though yes, this is similar to what I'd go with (minus the AN other). Probably Ahmed as the spinner - can pick up wickets but also gives us a very good batting option. Root and Bethell as backup spin options

@WG_RumblePants Right now I think I’d go Duckett, Gay/Tribe, Bethell, Root, Brook, Stokes, Rew (J), spinner, Atkinson, Archer, Tongue, an other (preferably a younger fast bowler). Gay not a specialist opener, but with no space in the middle order till Root retires, might be someone’s best chance

@henrywinter Of the youngsters coming through, who do you think is most likely to succeed? Mubama? Mheuka? JJ Gabriel (too early to talk, I know)? Lankshear? Very few young number 9s bashing down the door

30 years ago, Terry Venables could leave out Ian Wright for Euro 96 because he had Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham, Les Ferdinand and Robbie Fowler at centre-forward. Elite options at No 9 now? Basically, Harry Kane. Ollie Watkins, Dominic Solanke, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Danny Welbeck are below Kane’s level. Liam Delap needs to get the upward trajectory of his career back on track again. A “minor issue” benching/resting Kane will always be a major problem for England. FA coaches at St George’s Park debate why there are so few 9s emerging. Focus on 10s and wide attackers in academies, more teams playing only one centre-forward in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 and cage styles leading to “ballers” not poachers are all reasons discussed. Line-leading skills, back-to-goal expertise, finishing prowess need re-developing. Because Kane is 32 and succession planning is required. #ENG

We can announce that Gerhard Struber has been relieved of his duties as Bristol City Head Coach. Roy Hodgson will take charge of the Men’s First Team until the end of the season, while the club will task the incoming Sporting Director with appointing a permanent Head Coach for the 2026/27 campaign. The club’s recent performances have not met expectations and therefore Struber and Assistant Head Coach Bernd Eibler will leave with immediate effect.

@bbctms Not sure if under the current regime that performances have consequences, but if they did then I'd be excited for the Rews, the Ahmeds, Coles, Tribe, ASD and Hill. Would love to see a big season for James Minto too

@johncrossmirror Not an advocate of 4 keepers personally. Waste of a space in the squad imo….. but….. he is incredible around a team camp environment. Not enough people place enough importance on these characters affecting squad mentality. He’s been brilliant for Brighton even when not playing

Tuchel hints Jason Steele might go to World Cup as fourth keeper. “England has history to take fourth keeper for training. We identified Jason as candidate. He’s in March camp and has this chance.” To be clear, you can only pick 3 in squad but big characters like Heaton have gone in part to help training numbers.
