Everyone in work calls me Dave. Drives me insane. My name is David. I always introduce myself as David. My email signature is David. What nearly tipped me over the edge is when they bought me a personalised mug for my birthday, with, yes you guessed it, DAVE written on it.

@Top100Rick It’s great Interestingly when Dr MacKenzie designed Royal Melbourne west course in 1926 the plan has no pars on it He designed it for members and primarily for match play, his preferred game

The case for more match play golf courses: The modern move to golf courses designed for match play was led by Tom Doak at Ballyneal. Gil Hanse continued it at Ohoopee Match Club and Jonathan’s Landing. What is a “match play golf course”? Of course, you can play match play at any course. But when you design a course where par and total score are not relevant, you can do things that players won’t accept at other courses. Some take it as far as not having tee markers or slope or rating. This really changes the mindset of a player, which is hard to do. We are so set on stroke play that it takes bold moves to change that mindset. Total yardage becomes irrelevant. Par becomes irrelevant. Short par 4 or 5? Great. 80 yard or 260 yard par 3? Great. High risk/reward variance that doesn’t work for stroke play can work in match play. You can take more risks as an architect and as a player when a triple bogey only hurts you for one hole. Greens can get wild. Players are more accepting of craziness when they aren’t playing in stroke play. More importantly, the mindset change makes golf more fun for most. Instead of feeling like your round is ruined by a single blow up hole, you can reset and start over the very next hole. You can of course us all of these design elements on any golf course, but imo when you build it around a match play mindset, the players will accept far more creativity. Let’s play more golf the way it was meant to be!
