@RodKahx This is so typical of many Canadians fair-weather-friending the Americans. If there is even a shred of credit that Canadians think will make us look good, they loudly brag about our 'contribution', but when it looks bad, those same Canadians are outraged and demand withdrawal.

Liberals need a plan to get Alto shovels in the ground this year… 1) start property acquisition between Montreal and Ottawa now 2) order the tbm or gantry launchers before July 3) contracts for grading Montreal to Ottawa by October 4) equipment on site by March 5) get digging as soon as weather is good — Toronto tunnel or elevated section needs to be under way by the end of next year - so we need a route out of the city, and start getting equipment on site by end of next summer… Liberals need to show they are serious, you do that by acquiring property and major equipment…grading should be started as soon as possible, since it’s the most straightforward and can be broken up into many contracts…

@TransportAction I don't think they were surprised by these numbers. It sounds like they are establishing a baseline in their own support. The rural votes will be influenced heavily on the high impact of this project. Urban voters aren't likely to change votes over this one issue by comparison.

@elie_mcn That doesn't look like NIMBYism. That looks like a regional rejection. They don't pull off that kind of unilateral resistance to a project because it went through a few backyards and inconvenienced some. This map means the government screwed up in their initial consult proposal

While I understand the frustration, NIMBYism can't be why we don't have high speed rail. I oppose Alto because it's a politically motivated recipe for disaster. But Canada needs HSR. African countries have HSR. Via has trains from the 40s.
