I started [gulp] a substack. It’s called Utility Watch, and will feature @EnergyandPolicy's research, with opinions and analysis from me. My first post is on utility profits, and why the politicians increasingly going after them are smart to do so. utilitywatch.substack.com/p/welcome-to-u…

5+ GW of new natural gas plants to power Meta's expansion of its hyperion data center in NE Louisiana. Entergy claims ratepayers won't pay. But Entergy was not forthcoming w info about prior deal w Meta, which put ratepayers at risk for $2B of gas plants costs.

I think it’s interesting to note that Jesse says his new company is basically doing what vertically integrated utilities do: assemble a portfolio of resources to meet needs and use the grid most efficiently.
David Roberts@drvolts

Today on Volts: how can we get data centers hooked up without screwing over the grid or other ratepayers? Two of my favorite thinkers, @shinynew_oz & @JesseJenkins, lay out a new model whereby data centers bring some of their own generation & utilities offer flexible connection.

Google is now the first cloud provider to integrate 1 GW of flexible demand into long-term utility contracts. Our ability to shift or reduce our energy demand when it’s needed can help utility companies balance supply/ demand and plan for future capacity needs. This is a big milestone for responsible data center growth and helps keep costs lower for local communities. blog.google/innovation-and…

The world is changing right in front of us and no one knows it. Texas is running its world-class economy on 70% renewables, right now. Gas is there if we need it, but for today, we can save the fuel for another day.

The Edison Electric Institute works for utility shareholders, not utility ratepayers. That's why FERC should revive its dormant proceeding about utility trade association dues and ensure that utility shareholders pay for EEI, not the public.
EEI@Edison_Electric

EEI is at the @NYSE today to ring the Opening Bell alongside @ConEdison! EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney is celebrating how America’s electric companies are delivering the energy of every day—as well as Con Edison’s legacy of reliably serving New York City and the NYSE for more than 200 years.
