Reminder that Bracknell Forest Council sold the Afghan Resettlement Programme to residents as being for those Afghans who helped our armed forces. However, my Freedom of Information requests show they had no idea how many actually did. The MoD has also refused to release the information. The ARP covers two groups: those who worked alongside UK forces, and a much broader group of Afghan citizens deemed vulnerable by the UN, such as women, LGBT people and campaigners. What we do know from my other FOI requests is that the council spent £75,000 on translation services for Afghans in Bracknell last year alone. This raises the obvious question of why interpreters would require that level of translation support, and whether the council played on residents’ good nature and admiration for our armed forces to get the policy through. Maybe they just didn’t think to check. But either way, residents deserve transparency and straight talking from their council — not one that fails to do due diligence or presents sanitised versions and half-truths.
