"Mauritius is not for you". Chagossians, denigrated as "Ilois", reflect on their marginialisation and stigmatisation in Mauritius in this 2002 film "Diego l'Interdite"

The UK should not be wasting its time with these negotiations. It is walking into a situation where it would pay billions of pounds to rent its own islands; money which could be spent correcting historic wrongs and improving Chagossian welfare - something which Mauritius has neglected for decades. gov.uk/government/new…

Decolonisation means that both the UK and Mauritius must respect the indigenous rights of Chagossians. We will not be silenced or sidelined. #WeAreIndigenous #UNDRIP
UNPFII@UN4Indigenous

#UNGA adopts the resolution "The Rights of Indigenous Peoples" (A/78/477). It includes, among others: @UN_PGA to convene an event to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the WCIP; suggests that #CSW to consider #IndigenousWomen as priority theme in future sessions.

Today's proposals to increase the minimum income for a family visa to £38,700 are completely unacceptable . Chagossians, who are also British citizens and were forcibly removed by the UK from their homeland, have a right to a family life which should not be contingent on income.

Important development if confirmed. As I argued in my report with Tom Grant and Richard Ekins, there is no legal basis, nor indeed moral basis for handing over the Chagos to Mauritius, which sold the islands for cash in 1965 and persistently mistreated Chagossians. policyexchange.org.uk/publication/so…

EXC: Britain will drop plans to hand the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius under a new strategy being drawn up by Grant Shapps. Shapps is alarmed by Foreign Office plans to negotiate a “Cyprus-style” deal, while the US concerned about its airbase there. telegraph.co.uk/world-news/202…

As flattering(?) as the suggestion is, I am not, in fact, the British government. The onus is on those who seek to ignore Chagossian voices to explain why justice requires what they propose.
Colin Murray@CRGMurray

It was the UK Govt which insisted that the Chagossians were ordinary Mauritians for decades and only granted BOT citizenship status after sustained legal challenges. But now that it is a a useful distinction for UK security policy, sure, talk it up. Lavrov-league sophistry:

That memorable day at the UN when the Mauritian Government representative told a group of Chagossians they had no right to declare themselves indigenous, their statements are irrelevant, they have no right of self-determination and they would be settling Mauritians on Chagos.

Mauritius has cynically exploited the plight of the Chagossians to advance its territorial claims, but refuses to recognise that Chagossians have a say in the future of the Chagos islands, as we argue in our new report policyexchange.org.uk/publication/so…

Shameful! He is assuming that slaves were asked to sign a contract once #slavery was abolished in 1835. The law that forced people to be contracted before they were allowed on #Chagos was written in 1904. Obviously he got his timing wrong.@DkshrewsUK @DavidRutley @HouseofCommons

👀 The Foreign Office still refuses to recognise the Chagossians as “inhabitants” of the Chagos Islands 50 years after forcibly removing them. #DUKparliament

The latest statement by @JamesCleverly confirms that the UK Gov are in secret negotiations with Mauritius about Chagos which exclude Chagossians and Parliament. Chagossian groups, including CV, have written to him asserting our rights and deploring the tokenistic ‘consultation’.
