Essex County Council
The Reform UK group at Essex County Council has today confirmed the appointment of its Leader and Deputy Leader. Cllr Peter Harris has been elected by the group as Leader and Cllr Russell Quirk has been elected as Deputy Leader. Both appointments were agreed by members of the council’s Reform UK Group at a meeting on 11 May. Cllr Harris will now be nominated as Leader of the County Council at the Annual General Meeting of the council on 28 May. Cllr Harris has served as a district Cllr at Tendring District Council since 2019, holding roles including Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the council. On his election, Cllr Harris said: “I am honoured to have been chosen by my Group colleagues to lead them. “The people of Essex made their views clear at the polls last week. We have an incredibly strong mandate – we must move quickly to bring about changes and improvements they are desperate for. The next step is assemble the team who will make this county truly great again.” Cllr Quirk is currently a Cllr at Brentwood Borough Council, having been elected in 2025. He said: “I am delighted in the faith the group has placed in me to support Peter in his leadership. “We have already begun work to appoint a Cabinet full of talented, strong, passionate people to lead, challenge and bring about positive change in their areas of responsibility. I am excited at the prospect of working with them to deliver our agenda.”

Reading all the horror stories about people missing flights in Spain and Italy has made me decide I'm not going to book my September holiday in Menorca as I usually do. It'll be Skiathos, Kefalonia or Crete for me. 🇬🇷

@LNallalingham @Iromg I'm one of them . My husband got a very small rise in his private pension & ended up getting less in his pocket because he paid more tax!

🚨 The government has increased the tax burden on 2.25 million pensioners. Earlier this month I highlighted how they’ve hit 8 million people with an average £1,300 tax rise. Not because people are suddenly richer, but because tax thresholds have been frozen. As I dug into the data, it turns out 2.25 million of them are pensioners. Can you imagine? You work your whole life, pay tax, finally retire… …and the government taxes you again. It’s shameful.

@LNallalingham If your average numbers are true then at 20% they are receiving an average additional income of £7500 a year and were already earning at least the tax threshold of £12.5K.

A £35K salary sounds fine until you break down your actual time & cost  It’s not just the 8 hour work day. It’s the hour to & from work & the lunch break. It’s 3 extra hours a day of time cost When you factor this your hourly rate is more like £10. And that’s BEFORE tax And that’s 2 coffees in the morning, & the barista probably earned more per hour than you  That’s the new reality unless you do something about it

@suespensley @chrisray11 These the same Cllrs who had to resign because they realised they had to actually turn up or cancelled meetings because it interfered with their plans. Grifting is a way of life and Reform is the epitome of this. Go have a look at Farage’s latest grift numbers.

@chrisray11 That reply is such an insult to the hardworking Reform councillors, volunteers and millions of ordinary Brits in the country who support Reform It is not a one man band by any stretch of the imagination

@cryptostride @AdamDandy This is bollox. Duty/VAT is paid at the time of sale. Regardless of how much was paid for the stock if the transaction to the customer was after the increase in duty came into effect there would be no additional profit for the retailer due to the duty increase.

@AdamDandy Ive worked in the industry. They indeed price gouge. Classic thing they used to do was fill storage tanks before a government budget, then run out to put the price up 30 seconds after the announcement of a fuel duty rise

@ClaireCoutinho I am paying more tax due to Tory policy of freezing tax threshold (fiscal drag). I am paying more tax because I am earning more money. I get no allowance for travel or second home like you and your parasite colleagues #Toryscum

Many couples work hard, but cannot afford to have another child. Yet from this week, they’ll be paying more in tax so that couples on welfare with four, five, or six children receive more in benefits. This is not fair. It is not compassionate to make welfare pay more than work.

@Helen_Whately Also don’t get expenses to cover a second home, travel or subsidised meals whilst at work. What makes it worse is in your profession you steal from our taxes then claim it was an oversight. #Toryscum

You don't get a pay rise when you have a child. You make your money go further. But from this month, your taxes are funding households on benefits an extra £3,560 per child with no limit. Labour scrapped the 2-child benefit cap & put up benefits. People are asking - why work?

@StellingRobbie Most fans don’t like the negative ‘let’s not get beat’ attitude. Hoping to sneak a win is not a good tactic. This has resulted in too many draws against ‘lesser teams’. We easily have the squad to go out and win games but tactics don’t allow it.

This won't be universally popular, but I'd love to see the club put their faith in Featherstone, a young manager who knows the town, the team and the unique footballing culture. I think with the right level of structure, stability and support, Featherstone can succeed.

Huge thanks to @CornwallSport who will be doing comms of Truro v #Pools for us tomorrow. Not ideal but Truro isn’t an easy place to send someone on short notice 😅 I was due to head down to cover it but ended up being a late sub for Boro v Bristol City due to illness. #HUFC

And when 3 for 2 offer actually means 3 for £2 not 3 for 2. Signage is very misleading.

Proving your identity is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom before you can vote. You cannot prove your identity if your face is covered and cannot be matched to your photographic identification. Religious sensitivities must never override the law and certainly never the democratic process. No one should be allowed into a polling station with their face covered.
