After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. It has been an honor serving under @POTUS and @DNIGabbard and leading the professionals at NCTC. May God bless America.

cost of the new ferries now $1.9b and rising. + $700m for canning iReX + infrastructure work at the ports deferred into the 2030s + costs from 3 years' delay So, about the same cost as iReX but we end up with smaller, less capable ferries, and we have to wait longer
Tim Murphy@tmurphyNZ

No wonder Rail Minister Peters is trying to divert everyone back five years onto Covid issues. The ferry ‘savings’ aren’t so real thepost.co.nz/politics/36096…

This would be a little bit more credible if NZ had previously condemned the US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Having not done so, this comes across as one-eyed and self-serving.
Dr. Richard Kay@NZinUAE

New Zealand condemns Iran’s indiscriminate attacks against the UAE, including against civilians and civilian infrastructure. As a close friend and partner, the UAE has New Zealand’s strong solidarity and support 🇳🇿🤝🇦🇪

I'm in favor of letting people wear what they want and not taking photos of strangers in public to post on the internet for chiding. That's the real social faux pas, not wearing pajamas at Costco. Menswear for me is just an aesthetic hobby, not a moral system or obligation.
a mercury sable@2006Sable

Can’t say I’m surprised but the menswear guy being implicitly in favor of pajamas in public is pretty clear proof that he does not have any real principles and should be ignored

The statement on the 🇺🇸 & 🇮🇱 attacks on Iran by #NZ Govt is a disgrace. The Govt knows full well that international law has been breached even though negotiations were under way. It knows that 🇺🇸 walked away from the last nuclear agreement with Iran. Why the servility?

In absence of an imminent threat to security of US & Israel, the armed attacks on Iran are illegal under international law. The Iranian regime is a vicious theocracy which has caused huge trauma to its people. But that isn’t a reason for a breach of Iran’s sovereignty. @TheElders

Dr. Genevieve Guenther (she/they) 🪬
This is such an unscientific framing. We have to achieve net zero emissions in order to halt global heating. If net-zero is dead for 2050 that doesn't mean that fossil fuels now "remain crucial"; it means we must learn from failure and try something else to get them phased out.
Javier Blas@JavierBlas

COLUMN: Net zero by 2050 is effectively dead: Oil, natural gas and coal will remain crucial for meeting the world's energy needs. But that doesn't mean the end of renewable energy. Solar, in particular, is thriving, and will continue to boom. @Opinion bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

What foreigners don’t understand is that New Zealand’s greatest defence is being the most annoying people to occupy. There won’t be ambushes and IEDs, just boomers with their arms crossed and whinging like you couldn’t comprehend.

New Zealand doesn’t have a single fighter jet and this is their navy (barely existent) It’s actually a disgrace What the hell are you guys doing

Fascinating/horrifying to see the playbook deployed in real time - moving from "it's not real, we don't need to do anything about it" to "it's too late, we can't do anything about it". As long as we're not doing anything about it, they're happy. Hooton is, of course, wrong. 🧵
