You beat up, abduct, arrest people all in the name of imposing your candidate on them. What wrong have journalists done, to deserve all this.

We have taken the difficult decision to temporarily withdraw our @DailyMonitor @ntvuganda journalists from covering the Kawempe North by-election for their safely because they are being targeted and attacked by armed soldiers and undercover security operatives.

Some of the Nation Media Group-Uganda journalists gathered at @ntvuganda offices at Serena Hotel after being evacuated from Kawempe North, Kampala following security brutality and arrest of several colleagues who were covering Kawempe North MP by-election on March 13, 2025. Three of our journalists, Abubaker Lubowa, Raymond Tamale and Dennis Kabugo are missing after they were brutally arrested and whisked away by security operatives. #MonitorUpdates 📸Stephen Otage

PHOTOS: 34 opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party supporters, including MPs Derrick Nyeko and Muwada Nkunyingi, have appeared before Kanyanya Magistrates Court, where they were mostly charged with common nuisance and malicious damage to property. The accused, who pleaded not guilty before Grade I Magistrate William Muwonge, were arrested on Monday during a security crackdown on NUP supporters participating in a procession for Kawempe North by-election flagbearer Elias Nalukoola. #MonitorUpdates 📸@kakumirizi2002

VIDEO: 34 opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters, including MPs Derrick Nyeko and Muwada Nkunyingi, return to prison on Tuesday night after they were denied bail. ◉The group was driven back into custody following their appearance before Kanyanya Magistrates Court, where they pleaded not guilty to charges of common nuisance and malicious damage to property. ◉Their lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, has condemned the court's decision and vowed legal action against members of the police's Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT), who were filmed allegedly torturing NUP supporters. #MonitorUpdates 📹 @kakumirizi2002

EDITORIAL: Stop attacking journalists who are doing their jobs On February 25, while Miracle Ibra, a journalist at Top Television, went about carrying out his lawful duty, covering the nomination of Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party candidate Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi for the Kawempe North by-election, security personnel under the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT) assaulted him, injuring his right eye. It will take God’s intervention for Ibra’s right eye to see again, given the extent of the damage. By press time, he was set to undergo surgery. Article 45 of the 1995 Constitution gives the right to every Ugandan to practice his/ her profession and carry on with any lawful occupation, trade, or business. Indeed, Ibra was lawfully practicing his profession, but members of JATT decided to beat him up, contrary to the demands of our supreme law. It has been about five days since the ugly incident, but no one has come out to own up to the wrongs that the JATT members committed on Ibra and other people who were beaten during the nomination of the NUP candidate. We condemn security operatives who attack journalists going about their duty of informing Ugandans. If we aspire to be a democratic nation, then the rights of journalists, the Opposition and anyone holding divergent or independent opinions should be protected. Police is mandated to protect the lives and property of all Ugandans. They should not choose who to provide security for and who not to like as was the case with Ms Faridah Nambi, the flag bearer for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) who was allowed to paralyse traffic on Gayaza Road while her NUP opponent was being clobbered. Some observers fear that the Kawempe North by-election could be a glimpse into what could go wrong during the forthcoming 2026 General Election. As the media, we need to prepare for the times ahead. Media owners and managers should ensure that their journalists have protective gear, especially when going to cover stories that could turn out to be chaotic. Journalists should also move in groups and be each other’s keepers. Lastly, there is a saying in journalism that no story is worth a journalist’s life. As journalists go about practicing their profession, retreat when you see that things are turning chaotic, or at most cover from a distance, lest you become the next statistic. bit.ly/41l2KwA #MonitorUpdates
