So disappointing to discover that Nicholas Sandmann, the Covington Catholic High School student absurdly treated by the media (and Ben Shapiro, for that matter), is a Mitch McConnell acolyte. I remember that incident very well: Sandmann and his friends were positively exemplary in how they handled the bizarre behavior of Native American con man Nathan Phillips. I watched the entire two-hour video that eventually surfaced. At the beginning a group called the "Black Hebrew Israelites" is taunting the Native Americans at the Lincoln Memorial: "You're not supposed to worship eagles, buffalos, rams, all types of animals! This is the reason the Lord took away your land!" The Natives get called "Uncle Tomahawks" with their "head up the white man's ass." A Black man who shouts at them is met with: "You nigger! You nigger! … Get your Uncle Tom ass out of here!" For a solid hour the Covington kids endured shouts from the Black Hebrew Israelites: "You little dirty-ass crackers, your day coming!" "Dusty-ass animals!" "Bunch of child-molesting faggots!" They're compared to dogs and hyenas, told only whites shoot up schools, and that they themselves "look like they about to shoot up a school right now!" The kids kept their cool, drowning out the bizarre behavior with school cheers. Then con man Nathan Phillips, banging his drum, marched straight into the students. Note that he didn't march over to the Black Hebrews who had spent an hour insulting his own people, since of course he wouldn't have come out of that in one piece. Being a coward and a con man, Phillips approached the students instead. The con man thought it was the students, after an hour’s worth of vile filth being spewed at them, who needed to be approached with his drum. How deranged is that? Phillips later claimed the students "were in the process of attacking these four black individuals" and that he had placed himself "between beast and prey." Not one word of that was true. He must not have known video footage existed. The opposite was true. The Black Hebrews had done all the threatening. Phillips also said the students chanted. "Build the wall!" The full video shows no such thing. One student recalled: "In the midst of our cheers, we were approached by a group of adults led by Nathan Phillips…. We initially thought this was a cultural display…. We clapped to the beat." Soon it got weird, with Phillips right in their faces. You can hear kids asking, "What is going on?" That was enough for half the country to rush to judgment on a still photo of Sandmann staring calmly as a drum was banged inches from his face. Celebrities compared him to a Klansman. In a CNN interview, Phillips described the Black Hebrews as "some folks there that were expressing their First Amendment rights…. Some of it was educational, and it was truth, and it was history." And then this gem: "I don't know if I agreed with them or not." Well, how about that! Phillips doesn't know if he agrees with the slurs and attacks against his own people! He'll have to think that one over! As you know, the students were eventually vindicated. But here's the sad part. Yesterday young Nicholas Sandmann had to announce to the world that he's not at all for his local congressman, Rep. Thomas Massie -- who by the way stuck his neck out for Sandmann at a time when the establishment and half the right were attacking him. Not a word of gratitude, even in a perfunctory way. Instead, he had to tell us he's for "Ed Gallrein." Who? Massie's opponent, funded by three billionaires (when has a congressional primary been funded to the tune of $10 million?), is such a nonentity that he's skipped all eight debates, he cancels events when he finds out there will be press questions, and he won't even return the candidate questionnaires for the pro-life and gun groups in Kentucky that all candidates fill out! I don't care what your opinion is about the merits of the candidates. If for some reason you're supporting the handful of billionaires who are trying to buy a congressional seat, you should be embarrassed at the man's cowardice. I know I would be. It turns out young Nicholas is on "Team Mitch," as his Twitter bio says. You read that right. He endured nonstop, nationwide attacks from mainstream left and right alike and concluded: the country seems to be on the right track, so I think joining the establishment is the thing to do! So he works with Mitch McConnell, supports Andy Barr for Senate, the whole thing. What a tragedy, and a waste. Nicholas, we were all foolish when we were young. You don't have to waste your life on of all things Team Mitch. You have tremendous potential, and it will not be actualized inside Mitch McConnell's office. Ask yourself what Pat Buchanan would do, and act accordingly.
