Reading the responses to Dispensationalism by the contemporaries of Darby and Scofield in real time is WILD. No matter their denomination - Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant- it doesn't matter; they ALL said the same thing... In fact, it might be the ONLY thing all three pillars of the historic church agreed upon besides the resurrection of Christ: Dispensationalism was new, and had never before been seen in church history. Oswald T. Allis, cofounder of Westminster Theological Seminary, wrote that “it is generally agreed that the Dispensational teaching of the Brethren was something entirely new.” Samuel Prideaux Tregelles, one of the greatest textual critics of the century and a man who was once in Darby's cult, wrote, “I am not aware that any writer, from the Apostles downward, has ever asserted such a view. The system is absolutely new.” Even William Kelly, Darby’s own editor and admirer, could not pretend otherwise. Kelly said that Dispensationalism, “cannot claim the sanction of antiquity” and was “an interpretation unknown to the Church until recent years.” He was one of them. Philip Mauro that Dispensationalism is “modernism in prophetic dress” and “a system of teaching as far removed from the Gospel as Romanism.” He went on, “The Kingdom of God is not a future Jewish kingdom. The Kingdom is Christ’s Kingdom now.” James Orr, one of the founders of Fundamentalism, called it a “novel hypothesis” and wrote that “no such doctrine of the church and Israel has ever been held in Christendom before this century.” Charles Spurgeon, asked directly what he made of Darby’s new views, gave the shortest answer of all: “We hold to no new views concerning the future, and we have no desire for any.” W. G. Moorehead called the scheme “a modern construction, unknown to the Reformers and unknown to the early Church.” B. B. Warfield went straight for the jugular, declaring, “It is not a product of exegesis, but an imposition upon Scripture. Its scheme is arbitrary and artificial.” The patron saint of discernment, J. Gresham Machen, said, “The Christian church is the true Israel. There is no promise of God that is not fulfilled in Christ.” Alexander Reese said, “The doctrine of a secret rapture is wholly unknown in the Church until the nineteenth century.” Philip Schaff, the most important church historian America ever produced, said it was, “essentially a Jewish conception." These are the most respected theologians of the era. But, the twentieth century did not soften the verdict. J. I. Packer wrote that “Scofieldism has done a great disservice by teaching Christians to divide Scripture in ways the Bible does not.” R. C. Sproul said, “Dispensationalism is not found in the pages of Scripture.” Herman Bavinck said, “The church does not replace Israel. The church is Israel in its true form, fulfilled in Christ.” Presbyterians declared the system incompatible with the Westminster Standards. Confessional Baptists condemned it as a contradiction of their own Second London Confession. Lutherans rejected its two-peoples-of-God structure outright. Every branch of Christianity that otherwise fought over baptism and church government found common ground on this one point. Something new was afoot, and had never before been seen. The sharpest theological minds of their respective generations all reached the same verdict independently. It wasn't their belief that God would one day save the Jews and redeem them in the End Times. There have ALWAYS been Historic Premillennialists who believed that, from the Church Fathers to Spurgeon (to me). It was the **Dispensational Premillennialist** belief that even PRIOR TO their mass conversion by faith, Jews maintain a Covenant with God, remain the "chosen people," and are entitled to Abraham's promise. THAT was the part that was just unheard of. Dispensationalists pulling quotes from "the dead guys" to defend the future restoration of the Jews are desperate to find someone who believes what they believe prior to Darby. What they do instead - an attempted bait and switch - is find quotes of the dead guys who agree with them on something that is NOT the actual controversy. Try finding a quote where they apply Genesis 12:3 to unbelieving Jews, or alleging their a chosen people. Can't be done. It's like a Mormon finding a Church Father who believed God created the world in six days and saying, "See! They believed just like Mormons!" You'd be like, yeah...so that's not the actual controversy, though." SO WHAT if theologians of bygone eras believed God would save the Jews by faith through Christ and restore them to the Abrahamic Covenant? They also believed God would redeem Persia and draw them to Zion, but nobody is demanding we obey the American Iranian Public Affairs Committee - AIPAC II Electric Boogaloo - and carve out parts of the Holy Land for Iran on account of what God will do one day. Psalm 87:4-6 says God will redeem Palestine (Philistia) and they'll be drawn to co-habitate in Zion, but nobody says we have to support the Palestinians on account of God's future plans to save them. There should be a law against condemning "Replacement Theologians" one day, and then citing them the next in order to back you up on a matter that isn't even the controversy. It's either coming from a profoundly dumb person, or someone who thinks YOU are profoundly dumb. It's at this point the Dispensationalist will revert, back up, and retreat to Sola Scriptura. Without a historic witness, they'll argue that the Bible is all that matters anyway. But that ignores the point; if the Bible teaches it, why did a good and omnipotent God allow the Christian Church to go off its rails and teach "Replacement Theology" exclusively for 1800 years? Why were Tertullian and Chrysostom and Justin and Augustine and Irenaeus and Athanasius and Calvin and Luther and Knox and Zwingly and Wycliffe and Tyndale and Spurgeon and Edwards and Bunyan and Whitefield and Wesley et all incapable of discovering this truth, and a schismatic cultist from Ireland found it in his basement? It's a simple premise: That which is new is not true. That which is true is not new.
