We have two kinds of emotion, those that are destructive, like anger and jealousy, which destroy our peace of mind and damage our health. But we also have other constructive emotions, like compassion, that bring us inner strength.

Compassion enhances our self-confidence because a calm mind allows our marvellous human intelligence to bloom. When we’re angry, our thinking is distorted and we don’t see the different aspects of reality. A calm mind enables us to take a broader, more realistic view.

Developing concern for others, thinking of them as part of ‘us’, brings self-confidence, reduces our sense of suspicion and mistrust, and enables us to develop a calm mind. This is important, because a calm mind can help us better cope with physical discomfort and other problems.

If we followed our government’s advice to eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, 50% of our diet should be plant food. Yet only 2% of our agriculture land is used for these crops, while 59% is used to grow commodity crops, the raw materials for processed food.

In our busy age of “Do more and be more,” it’s easy to feel like we just aren’t enough, or that time for ourselves is selfish, but self-love is a critical piece of our wellbeing that can throw everything else off when it’s not supported.
