@lauriewired @giffmana Agreed. Intel was clearly (still is?) making excuses for giving themselves huge advantages. You don't need uarch/CPU/SKU-specific tuning for such major discriminations; the worst, un-tuned codegen with SSE2 will beat tuned-to-individual-die x87. CPUID was created for a reason.

A reminder of back when I got to look into why we did all the research for 18-inch wafers but never followed through for mass production. Everyone talking about supply chain limits in logic, DRAM, but we could have made it easier on ourselves. This was at @IBM with @Mukesh_IBM
