Budding physicist (quantum optics, 2D materials), juxtaposition of contradictions, visiting Twitter if I ever feel like a dose of despair and hopelessness

Excited to share the results of our latest experiments, where we discovered polariton-mediated thresholdless Raman lasing, which we explain in the framework of PT-symmetry. #polariton #laser #lightmattercoupling #condmat #optics #2dmaterial #tmds #nano

@frozenspin Well, this post appeared randomly on my feed - the algorithm clearly knows what it's doing since I'm in an adjacent field. Congratulations!

@theliverdoc @josephraim3604 This article says milk in pouches need to be heated above 75 degrees to kill pathogens. I don't think anyone boils tetrapak milk, so we're good..

Please do not drink raw milk. It is not healthy. Please do not boil packaged milk. It does not make it healthier.

@abhijit_MLab Had a similar experience. These scammers send random Google map links, ultimately they make money by making you send money to them. Restaurants are innocent

They offered me money for writing a nice review even without being there. So I did :)

@mnwsth Is the secret to just give up on trying to secure high impact journal publications? How do you avoid the inevitable Reviewer #2?

As much as I dislike the academic publication circus, I very much enjoy the act of writing papers. Now more so than ever. I have started to write papers the way I want to write them. Not to address the random arguments that Reviewer # 2 might bring up during reviews.

@mnwsth @vishesh_sood Do we have statistics of how long PhDs take in India? Would love to see. Institute and subject-wide breakdowns would be amazing

@vishesh_sood No where is the duration of one's PhD recognized as work experience. In India there are multiple faults with the process, on an average, across the country, the duration of PhD is not unnaturally long. If anything, it is shorter than it should be.

Please remember that PhD stipends are not salaries. They were never intended to be. In essence, PhDs are paid apprenticeships. You get paid a stipend while you learn the tools of the trade, the trade in this case being research, and how to do it. That said, there is definitely an opportunity cost to every PhD. If you decide to do a PhD, in the typical case, you forego some of your best earning years of your life.
Kriti Bajpai@ImmunoKritical

@mnwsth 37k is peanuts when considering cuties with higher COL. Not to forget that many scholars get married and also start a family while in PhD. Would you say 37k is enough for them as well?

@mnwsth Right. But the severe opportunity cost means you'll lose many of the best minds to better-paying positions abroad (like you acknowledged), or to other careers. I suppose that's a reflection of the priority scientific research gets in India. It's not even close to a top priority

One lesson Uttar Pradesh teaches us - no matter what you do for Hindus, they’ll either stay at home & not vote or they’ll be stupid & spineless. Reason why Congress always trusted Muslim appeasement.
